Two visually impaired youths from Jharkhand have created history through their sheer determination and hard work by conquering hostile mountain conditions in the Himalayas. Shekhar Gop, a resident of West Singhbhum district, successfully scaled the challenging Dzo-Jongo peak in Ladakh, located at an altitude of approximately 20,000 feet, and unfurled the Indian national flag at the summit. Accompanied by his climbing partner Dheeraj Kumar, who also demonstrated remarkable endurance by ascending to an altitude of 16,732 feet, the duo proved that physical limitations cannot hinder extraordinary ambitions. Both climbers are 100 percent visually impaired.
Conquering the Treacherous Heights of Dzo-Jongo Peak
The expedition to the summit of Dzo-Jongo in Ladakh presented extreme technical and physical challenges. At an altitude nearing 20,000 feet, mountaineers must contend with sub-zero freezing temperatures, severely depleted oxygen levels, icy winds, and treacherous rocky terrain. Despite these daunting conditions, Shekhar Gop persevered step by step until he reached the high peak to raise the tricolor. Meanwhile, Dheeraj Kumar pushed through arduous conditions to reach 16,732 feet. Owing to health issues arising at high altitude, Dheeraj made the prudent decision not to proceed beyond the base camp area, though his courageous effort was widely praised.
Roots in Jharkhand and the Transformative Sabal Initiative
Both mountaineers hail from modest rural backgrounds in Jharkhand. Shekhar Gop is a resident of Toranhatu village in West Singhbhum, while Dheeraj Kumar comes from the Karajamda region. A defining moment in their lives occurred in 2022 when they joined the 'Sabal' program organized by the Tata Steel Foundation. Through this initiative, both individuals received comprehensive training in Braille literacy, independent living skills, mobility techniques, and digital technology. This foundation laid the groundwork for their self-reliance and instilled deep confidence in their capabilities.
Rigorous Preparation in Dalma Hills and Sports Experience
Following their foundational training, both individuals continuously sought opportunities to test their limits. They became active members of Jharkhand's blind football team, an experience that honed their coordination and sportsmanship. When the opportunity for the Dzo-Jongo mountaineering expedition arose, they viewed it as the ultimate test of their physical and mental endurance. To prepare for Ladakh's harsh conditions, they underwent intensive conditioning in the Dalma hills near Jamshedpur. This training focused strictly on building stamina, physical fitness, patience, and psychological resilience, which ultimately proved decisive during their high-altitude expedition.
