A horrific incident driven by the fear of social dishonor has come to light from Maharashtra's Gondia district, where a 29-year-old man abandoned his 21-year-old girlfriend at a secluded bus stop after she was bitten by a poisonous snake. Instead of rushing the agonizing woman to a nearby medical facility, the boyfriend fled the scene to protect his personal image, leaving her to die without any medical assistance. Following a thorough police investigation, Gondia Rural Police arrested the accused boyfriend on charges of gross criminal negligence and culpable homicide. A local court subsequently remanded him to one day of police custody.
Snakebite Near Roadside Bushes and Shocking Delay in Treatment
According to official details provided by the Gondia Rural Police, the tragic series of events took place on the night of July 5 between 8:30 PM and 11:50 PM. The 21-year-old woman, a resident of Dhamangaon in Aamgaon tehsil of Gondia district, was traveling on a motorcycle with her 29-year-old partner, identified as Jageshwar alias Sonu Hemraj Patle. During their journey, the woman requested a temporary stop near roadside bushes to urinate. As she stepped close to the dense bushes, a venomous snake bit her on the foot.
In any venomous snakebite case, securing immediate emergency medical care and administering anti-venom serum at a hospital within the golden hour is critical to saving the victim's life. However, rather than displaying basic human judgment, the accused boyfriend showed extreme negligence. Instead of driving her to the nearest primary health center or clinic, Patle accelerated his motorcycle in a desperate bid to drop her off quickly at her residence to hush up the matter.
Venom Spread Rapidly as Fear of Social Stigma Took Over
As the pair continued their ride along the Sahukartoli to Tanda village route, the woman's physical condition deteriorated rapidly near the Adasi bus stop due to the fast-spreading venom. The toxic venom caused severe dizziness, complete loss of speech, and an inability to maintain her balance on the moving motorcycle.
Seeing his partner struggling between life and death, Patle panicked. However, his panic was driven not by concern for her survival, but by fear of public exposure. He worried that bringing her to a hospital would involve doctors and law enforcement, revealing their secret relationship to their families and society. Overwhelmed by the fear of losing his social reputation, the accused crossed all bounds of callousness and dumped his collapsing girlfriend at the deserted Adasi bus stop.
Confiscated Phone and Fled Scene under False Pretenses
Adding to his cruelty, Patle seized the victim's mobile phone to prevent her from contacting emergency services or bystanders for help. He then made a false pretense of informing her family members before fleeing the scene, leaving her helpless in the dark. Bereft of timely medical care, the young woman succumbed to the snake venom right at the bus stop.
Initially, following a complaint by the deceased woman's father, Gondia Rural Police filed a case of accidental death under Marg No. 23/2026 under section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS). However, as investigating officers meticulously assembled the timeline and physical evidence, they uncovered a dark reality: the death was not merely caused by a snakebite, but was the direct result of deliberate criminal negligence and abandonment by her boyfriend.
Culpable Homicide Charges Filed and One-Day Police Remand Granted
Upon establishing the facts, Gondia Rural Police registered a formal criminal case against Jageshwar alias Sonu Patle under relevant provisions for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and criminal negligence. Officers swiftly arrested Patle and presented him before a local magistrate court. The court granted the police a 1-day police custody remand (PCR) to facilitate further interrogation and evidence collection. Further investigation into the incident remains underway.
