A tragic outing ended in disaster when two young college students lost their lives after drowning in a lake-like pond in the Dahisar suburb of Mumbai. The local police have initiated a primary investigation into the tragic matter, raising serious concerns that the youngsters might have entered the deep water while under the influence of alcohol, leading to a loss of physical control.

Tragedy at Ketkipada Pond in Dahisar

The victims of this unfortunate incident, both aged nineteen, have been identified as Piyush Gupta from Kandivali and Om Ankush Singh from Andheri. Along with two of their other friends, the duo had planned a swimming excursion to a pond situated in the Ketkipada area of Dahisar. According to authorities, the group of four friends had formulated this specific plan two days prior to the incident.

On the day of the mishap, things took a fatal turn when the two teens went deep into the water. Police investigators strongly suspect that consumption of alcohol preceded their decision to enter the deep waters, which ultimately led to the fatal drowning. The police are currently recording statements from the two surviving friends who accompanied the victims. This will help clarify whether there was peer pressure involved or if they indeed consumed alcohol before stepping into the dangerous water zone. The Ketkipada pond is known to have steep, deceptive depths that can catch even experienced individuals off guard. The investigation remains active as authorities piece together the exact sequence of events.

A Similar Water Disaster in Gondia

This heartbreaking incident comes on the heels of another water-related tragedy that recently occurred at a popular tourist spot in Maharashtra. At the famous Bodalkasa reservoir located in Gondia, a boat capsized, leading to the untimely demise of two young men. The victims in that accident were identified as Mohit Vasant Rahangdale and Kunal Salikram Bhonde, both residents of Barbaspura village under the Tiroda tehsil.

The group of youths had travelled to the scenic reservoir for weekend sightseeing. During their visit, they decided to go boating. However, the boat lost its balance and overturned mid-way, throwing the occupants into the deep waters. Despite a massive gathering of locals and even the local member of the legislative assembly arriving at the spot to coordinate rescue efforts, the youths could not be saved in time. Their bodies were later retrieved from the reservoir, leaving their families in absolute shock and mourning. The local administration has since warned tourists against opting for unregulated boating services without standard life jackets.

Crucial Guidelines for Water Safety

Experts urge extreme caution before entering any water body, emphasizing that individuals who do not know how to swim must strictly avoid venturing into water. This caution applies both to personal swimming attempts and recreational boating activities. Deep waters often pose hidden dangers and can deceive even experienced individuals, leading to sudden loss of life. Even for skilled swimmers, experts strongly advise against visiting isolated or deep water locations alone, as emergency situations require immediate external assistance. Neglecting basic safety gear can easily turn a fun weekend trip into a lifetime of grief for families.

What this means for you

  • In Maharashtra: Local administrations are expected to secure hazardous water bodies and strictly enforce safety protocols near tourist spots.
  • For Readers: The tragedy highlights the extreme danger of entering water bodies under the influence of alcohol or without utilizing proper safety equipment like life jackets.
