The state government of Manipur has set a deadline of 2028 to complete the fencing of its entire 398-kilometer international border with Myanmar. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam shared this information in the Manipur Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, highlighting that around 55 kilometers of fencing work has been completed so far along the border stretch.
Progress on Border Construction and Transportation Hurdles
Providing details on the ongoing infrastructure work, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam explained that the completed 55-kilometer section lies between Border Pillar Nos. 32 and 130. However, the overall project has faced substantial delays due to logistics problems, particularly the challenges involved in transporting heavy construction materials to remote and difficult border terrains. In addition to physical fencing, authorities are actively working to formally demarcate sections of the international boundary that currently remain unmarked.
Identifying Sensitive Sectors Along the Myanmar Border
Border security remains a vital priority for the state, making physical barriers essential for regional safety and law enforcement. The Home Minister specifically pointed out that the stretch between Border Pillar Nos. 75 and 79 in the Moreh sector is among the most sensitive areas along the boundary. Completing the protective barrier across these vulnerable points is considered critical to strengthening vigilance and preventing illegal activities across the border.
Clarification on Rumored India-Myanmar Land-Swap Proposals
The minister's statement came in response to a calling attention motion raised in the Assembly by Congress MLA K Ranjit Singh regarding reports of a potential land-swap arrangement between India and Myanmar. Addressing these concerns directly, Govindas Konthoujam clarified that the state government has received no official communication from the Ministry of External Affairs regarding any such land-swap proposal, affirming that no official information on the matter has been shared by central authorities.
