The Meghalaya government is moving forward with plans to establish a designated parking facility at Umtyngar specifically for commercial vehicles arriving from outside the state. This strategic initiative is designed to encourage incoming tourists to transition to local taxis for their sightseeing needs and onward travel across the region.
Transport Minister Outlines Tourism Goals
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar stated that the decision was finalized during a high-level meeting held on Monday. The primary objective of this measure is to ensure that local taxi operators and various other stakeholders actively benefit from the expanding tourism sector within the state.
Committee Formation and Security Reviews
The meeting also concluded that a dedicated committee will be constituted comprising homestay owners, taxi operators, and government representatives. This body will work to address the grievances of local stakeholders and guarantee their meaningful participation in tourism-related economic activities. Furthermore, officials including police representatives, the Deputy Commissioner, and members of the Tourism Department gathered to review ongoing security arrangements at popular tourist hotspots.
Focus on Sohra and Visitor Safety
Special emphasis was dedicated to Sohra, recognized as one of the major tourism destinations in Meghalaya, with extensive discussions centered on reinforcing security measures to safeguard visitors. Overall, these combined initiatives aim to resolve local transport challenges while enhancing overall tourism management and ensuring that financial gains from the growing visitor influx directly reach local service providers and communities.
