A severe mid-air security crisis unfolded inside the cockpit of a commercial airliner carrying 174 passengers from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a pilot stabbed his colleague and attempted to force the plane into a fatal dive. The aircraft plummeted more than 17,000 feet in under two minutes over Saudi Arabian airspace, causing widespread terror throughout the cabin. Despite sustaining grave stab wounds, the targeted Indian captain managed to unlatch the flight deck door, allowing terrified passengers and off-duty crew members to rush the cockpit, wrestle the attacker to the floor, and pull the controls back in time to avert disaster. The aircraft was ultimately diverted to Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia, where it touched down safely, leaving the injured captain hospitalised in stable condition while the assailant was taken into custody.
Mid-Air Plummet and Cockpit Squawk Alert
The journey began normally on Wednesday morning when Flydubai flight FZ1073 departed Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates at 03:05 GMT (07:05 local time), bound for Ben-Gurion Airport in Israel. The crisis began roughly two and a half hours into the flight while cruising over Saudi Arabia. Technical telemetry recorded by aviation tracking platform Flightradar24 revealed that the aircraft entered a sudden, steep descent, dropping more than 17,000 feet (over 5,000 metres) in less than two minutes as the aircraft went into a spin.
Inside the flight deck, emergency communications quickly mirrored the chaos. The aircraft initially transmitted a squawk 7700 distress code to air traffic control, but this was soon escalated to squawk 7500, the universal aviation transponder signal denoting an unlawful interference or hijacking. Approximately twenty minutes following these initial distress alerts, the plane circled back within Saudi airspace to initiate a manual landing approach. Nearly an hour later, the transponder returned to squawk 7700. In response to the unfolding emergency, both the Israeli and Saudi Arabian air forces scrambled fighter jets to monitor the flight, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened urgent high-level consultations.
Captain Smit Machchhar's Heroism and Cockpit Breach
While initial reports described the disruption as a physical altercation between flight deck personnel, the full scale of the incident emerged once the plane landed in Tabuk. Officials confirmed that an attacking pilot had stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later described as an apparent attempt to deliberately crash the plane. Even after suffering severe knife wounds and bleeding heavily, Captain Machchhar remained at his station near the fortified cockpit door, managing to unlock the mechanism just before collapsing, thereby providing access to those outside.
Passenger Yaniv Hayun later recounted the harrowing intervention, explaining that the wounded captain was lying very close to the door, making it difficult to push through from the outside. Once the latch released, Hayun forced his way into the flight deck and saw the attacker actively trying to disable the aircraft's control systems. Hayun immediately locked the assailant in a chokehold while other travellers rushed forward to help pin him down. Hayun also grabbed the flight controls to help level the aircraft, allowing another pilot on board to assume operational command of the flight.
Assailant Restrained With Headphone Wires and Zip Ties
Further details of the onboard struggle were shared by passenger Zvika Meness, who revealed that travellers used the attacker's own plastic zip ties alongside multimedia headphone wires collected from the passenger cabin to bind the assailant securely. Meness noted the profound psychological toll on those aboard, stating that numerous families and young children were subjected to a deeply traumatic ordeal. In an official release, Flydubai acknowledged that an altercation took place within the flight deck and confirmed that on-duty crew travelling on the flight successfully regained control, safely landing the aircraft at Tabuk airport. An airline spokesperson emphasised that their top priority remains the health, safety, and wellbeing of everyone on board, alongside full cooperation with investigating authorities.
Following the emergency landing, the suspect was arrested on Saudi soil. Netanyahu indicated that the individual is expected to be transferred to the United Arab Emirates, where the journey originated. Meanwhile, the Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia issued an update confirming that Captain Smit Machchhar is receiving medical treatment in a local hospital and remains in stable condition.
Global Reactions and Unresolved Questions on Motive
The bravery exhibited by Captain Smit Machchhar drew public commendation from national leaders. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on social media platform X that despite grave danger and serious physical trauma, Captain Machchhar demonstrated exceptional bravery and an unshakeable determination to safeguard human lives, adding that India is immensely proud of him. Netanyahu similarly hailed the captain as a true hero, posting on X that Machchhar's resistance and presence of mind to open the cockpit door prevented a catastrophic mid-air disaster.
Reactions from other political leaders offered contrasting perspectives on the attacker's motivation. US President Donald Trump stated that he had spoken with Netanyahu regarding the incident, remarking that the assailant was perhaps a terrorist or driven by other motives. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz characterized the episode as an attempted jihadist terror attack, though he provided no specific corroborating evidence. In contrast, Netanyahu adopted a more cautious tone during his public remarks, stating that it remained too early to determine what motivated the attack or whether there was any indication of Iranian involvement, while confirming that Israel had received no prior intelligence or warnings about a threat to the flight.
Repatriation and Emotional Welcome in Tel Aviv
Following hours of uncertainty in Tabuk, the passengers, who were almost entirely Israeli nationals, boarded a dedicated repatriation flight back to Tel Aviv, arriving at Ben-Gurion Airport at approximately 18:40 local time (15:40 GMT) on Wednesday. They were met on the tarmac by emotional crowds singing, dancing, waving Israeli flags, and playing live music. Israeli ambulance service personnel who attended the arrival described passengers weeping openly from relief and shock as they disembarked. As international aviation authorities and security agencies continue their investigation, the incident stands as an extraordinary escape enabled by rapid passenger intervention and the resilience of a wounded pilot.
