Domestic equity markets are projected to encounter persistent downward momentum on Wednesday, September 16, following a severe round of selling that battered benchmark gauges during the prior trading session. Escalating international crude prices, a softening rupee, rising bond yields, and renewed fears of inflationary spikes are dampening market sentiment, with global investors additionally maintaining a watchful stance ahead of the US Federal Reserve's rate verdict.
Tuesday Market Rout and Heightened Volatility
The domestic trading arena underwent extreme volatility on Tuesday, September 15. The Nifty began the day on an optimistic footing, touching an intraday peak of 23,592, but the upside momentum evaporated rapidly once selling emerged at elevated territories. Over the course of the session, the gauge erased more than 550 points from its session zenith, ultimately settling beneath the 23,150 threshold.
The Sensex surrendered 777.94 points, representing a loss of 1.04%, to settle at 74,003.82, while the Nifty slipped 279.50 points, or 1.19%, ending the day at 23,118.60. Volatility indicators signaled rising nervousness across the street, as the India VIX jumped approximately 9% to finish around 13.4.
Macroeconomic Headwinds and Elevated Energy Costs
The pronounced market pullback unfolded against the backdrop of crude oil trading above $105 per barrel, triggering apprehensions regarding the national import bill and domestic price stability. The depreciation of the rupee alongside elevated bond yields intensified the strain on equities, while investors opted to conserve cash ahead of pivotal announcements from the US central bank.
Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research, Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, observed:
"Indian equities are likely to remain weak amid elevated crude prices, renewed inflation concerns and uncertainty ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision."He pointed out that Brent crude appreciated 2.3% to hover around USD 108/bbl due to persistent supply concerns and geopolitical frictions, worsening overall inflationary pressures.
Nifty Technical Trajectory and Key Pivot Zones
Following Tuesday's intense slide, technical charts for the Nifty demonstrate notable structural deterioration. The formation of an expansive bearish candle on the daily timeframe reflects strong overhead supply, particularly after the gauge gave up morning gains. Furthermore, dropping below the preceding week's bottom of 23,231 reinforces the prevalence of downward momentum.
Bajaj Broking Research noted in their technical assessment:
"Going ahead, bias remain down below 23,600 levels being the Monday's high and last week breakdown area."Analysts project that continued selling pressure could pave the path lower toward the 23,000 and 22,800 zones in forthcoming sessions. Halting this descent would require the formation of higher highs and higher lows on daily charts alongside a decisive move past 23,600.
Consequently, the 23,600 zone emerges as a critical pivot mark for the Nifty heading into Wednesday. A sustained advance above this boundary could trigger a relief bounce, whereas an inability to recapture it leaves the market open to further liquidation. On the downside, 23,000 and 22,800 serve as essential buffers to monitor closely.
Bank Nifty Strains and Critical Support Thresholds
Banking equities also recorded substantial losses on Tuesday, with the Bank Nifty retreating sharply after meeting resistance above the 57,000 mark. The banking gauge formed a significant bearish candle and concluded trading near the 56,000 mark, accentuating immediate downside risks.
Bajaj Broking Research outlined the index parameters:
"Index is currently placed around the lower band of the last 11-week range 56,000-58,700."Their analysis highlights that violating and closing under the prior week's low of 55,700 would indicate an elongation of the corrective phase towards 55,200 and 54,800 in the coming days.
For Wednesday's trading hours, the 57,000 level stands as an imposing barrier for the Bank Nifty. Reclaiming this territory on a closing basis is necessary to signal stabilization. Conversely, breaking beneath 55,700 is expected to open the gates for extended corrective declines towards 55,200 and 54,800.
