In Jammu and Kashmir's frontier Rajouri district, vigilant Indian Army personnel deployed along the Line of Control detained a 17-year-old minor girl who crossed over from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir into Indian territory. The incident took place in the Lam area of the Nowshera sector during regular surveillance operations, where troops spotted unexpected movement and quickly intervened. During initial questioning, the teenager stated that she did not cross the border intentionally and had inadvertently wandered into Indian territory. She has been identified as S. Azeem, daughter of Mohammad Azeem, residing in the Khuiratta area of PoJK.
Troops Intercept Movement During Routine Vigilance in Lam Sector
Soldiers stationed at forward positions in the Lam sector were carrying out their standard monitoring duties when they noticed suspicious activity near the border perimeter. Acting swiftly, the personnel stopped the teenager and took her into safe custody. Following preliminary inquiries conducted by army units at the scene, she was formally handed over to the local police authorities to facilitate an in-depth investigation and complete legal formalities.
Security Agencies Scrutinise Circumstances Behind the Border Crossing
During initial questioning by security personnel, the minor stated that she had no deliberate plan to enter Indian territory and crossed the demarcation line purely by accident. Despite her explanation, multiple security agencies along with police officials are actively working to verify the authenticity of her claim. Investigators are currently examining the precise route, environmental conditions, and underlying events that led her to reach the Line of Control and step across into India.
Verification of Identity and Family Details Underway
Officials have pointed out that drawing any firm conclusions before the comprehensive investigation concludes would be premature. Consequently, thorough verification of the minor's identity, resident status, and background details regarding her family is currently being conducted. The inquiry aims to establish full clarity and rule out any security-related angles or suspicious factors behind her presence.
Standard Repatriation Protocol for Inadvertent Border Crossings
The Line of Control across Jammu and Kashmir remains an exceptionally sensitive and closely guarded zone, yet local residents living in border pockets occasionally stray across the boundary due to confusion, tough terrain, or unforeseen circumstances. In all such situations, established standard operating procedures are systematically followed. Army units initially take the individual into custody and conduct an essential primary assessment of the person's identity and background.
Following this initial stage, the person is transferred to local police or investigative departments for detailed screening. Once the multi-agency inquiry confirms that the crossing was indeed unintentional and involved no criminal intent or security threat, formal steps are initiated for the person's safe return.
The established military communication framework between Indian and Pakistani sides is utilised for coordinating such returns. As required, communication is exchanged via military hotlines or scheduled flag meetings to apprise counterparts across the border of the situation. After all necessary verifications and approvals are complete, the individual can be repatriated through designated official crossing points along the Line of Control. In previous instances, humanitarian returns of inadvertent crossers have been facilitated through established points such as Chakan Da Bagh in Poonch and Kaman Aman Setu in Uri.
