Following days of heavy rainfall across the hilly terrains of Himachal Pradesh, triggering hazardous landslides, residential settlements in the region are facing severe structural damage. Late Tuesday night, between 12:00 AM and 12:30 AM, a massive rockfall occurred in Upper Gholti within Sarol village of Chamba district. A gigantic boulder weighing over 100 quintals (approximately 10 tons) detached from the mountain ridge and hurtled down the slope, smashing directly onto the reinforced concrete roof (lanter) of Parvinder Kumar's residence. The impact completely shattered the roof structure, sparking fear among local residents.
Destruction in Sarol Village as Family Narrowly Escapes Disaster
The colossal boulder rolled down with tremendous momentum, uprooting trees and damaging agricultural fields in its path before tearing through the roof of the dwelling. Miraculously, a catastrophe was avoided because the boulder struck the rear portion of the house. Family members who were resting in the two front rooms escaped unharmed. Although no injuries or casualties were recorded, the interior of the house was reduced to rubble, destroying household furniture, appliances, and essential belongings.
Immediate Financial Assistance and Administrative Relief Measures
Upon receiving news of the midnight accident, Zila Parishad Vice Chairman Liaqat Ali arrived at the location to inspect the damage. He instructed the local revenue official (halka patwari) to immediately process the paperwork and document the loss. Coordinating with Chamba Sadar MLA Neeraj Nayyar, an immediate relief amount of ₹25,000 was disbursed to Parvinder Kumar's family. Liaqat Ali stated that under state government guidelines, compensation of up to ₹7 lakh can be sanctioned for structural damages of this nature, and the necessary documentation is being finalized by administrative authorities. Additionally, a comprehensive emergency relief kit from the District Collector (DC) of Chamba containing food rations, drinking water, clothing, and household provisions is being delivered to the family.
Swelled Mountain Streams and Widespread Vehicle Damages
Unrelenting rainfall starting Tuesday morning caused local streams and rivers across Chamba district to swell dramatically. The overflowing water carried silt and heavy debris directly into nearby residential areas. Sultanpur Nallah surged dangerously, causing severe structural damage to more than 25 residential houses and a local shop in the Sultanpur neighborhood of Chamba. Meanwhile, a major landslide near Bhariyad along the Udaipur-Gholthi-Navodaya road buried at least a dozen parked vehicles under dense mud and rocks, including private cars, trucks, and two-wheelers. Fortunately, no human casualties have been reported from these immediate landslide sites.
Statewide Road Infrastructure Blocked and Shimla Water Crisis
Landslides have left streets and transport links buried under tons of mud and boulders. In a separate incident, fast-flowing currents from the Tadoli Nallah swept heavy rocks into a commercial shop, destroying the structure entirely. Data released by the State Emergency Operation Centre indicates that 178 roads have been closed across Himachal Pradesh due to landslides and flash floods. Mandi district remains the worst affected with 58 blocked roads, followed by Kullu with 42, Chamba with 30, Sirmaur with 26, Shimla with 16, Lahaul-Spiti with 3, Kangra with 2, and Una district with 1 road closure.
Furthermore, at least 107 drinking water supply projects and 62 electrical power transformers have suffered extensive damage statewide. Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited issued an official statement advising residents that municipal water supply across Shimla could remain disrupted over the coming days. This disruption stems from transformer failures at the Satluj water supply project combined with heavy silt accumulation and flooding across major water intakes. Since the onset of the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh on June 30, landslides and flash floods have claimed 15 lives across the state.
