A horrifying incident of street robbery and violence has surfaced from Assam's premier city, Guwahati, where a pedestrian woman was dragged along the tarmac after resisting a snatching bid. The chilling episode unfolded in the Kahilipara locality on October 5 as the woman was walking along the roadway. Two men riding a scooter approached her from behind and attempted to forcefully wrest her handbag away. When the victim refused to let go of her belongings, the assailants refused to halt, accelerating their two-wheeler and dragging her along the road for approximately 50 metres before speeding away into the distance.
The Traumatic Encounter in Kahilipara
The brazen attack took place in the residential and commercial neighborhood of Kahilipara on October 5. According to available details, the victim was on foot when the two unidentified scooterists closed in on her. Without warning, the pillion rider or the driver grabbed her handbag to make a swift escape. However, the woman stood her ground and gripped the bag tightly to prevent the theft. Instead of giving up or slowing down, the suspects pressed on the throttle, causing the woman to lose her balance, crash onto the asphalt, and get dragged along the street for nearly 50 metres as the scooter fled.
Disturbing CCTV Footage Captures the Ordeal
The entire struggle was captured on a nearby closed-circuit television camera. The surveillance footage starkly shows the woman desperately clinging to her bag while being violently pulled along the abrasive road surface. The recorded visual evidence illustrates the severe danger that street-level snatchers pose to ordinary citizens, demonstrating how a routine theft attempt can instantly escalate into a life-threatening encounter. After dragging the victim across the 50-metre stretch, the duo managed to break away and fled the scene entirely.
Concerns Over Urban Safety and Status of Police Action
The shocking visuals have ignited deep worries regarding public safety, pedestrian vulnerabilities, and the growing menace of opportunistic muggers across public thoroughfares in Guwahati. The incident has raised acute alarm among everyday commuters and female pedestrians who navigate city roads on foot. As of now, clear official details regarding the formal registration of a police complaint, the identification of the two scooter-borne suspects, or any arrests in connection with the crime remain unavailable. Further clarity on legal action will only emerge once investigating authorities make official progress in the case.
