A family residing in the Khurja town of Bulandshahr district went through a terrifying ordeal on Friday night when their daughter, a student at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow, was left stranded. The student was scheduled to fly from Lucknow to Jewar Airport in Noida on Friday night at 9:40 PM to appear for an important academic examination on Saturday. During their last conversation in the evening, she had informed her parents that her flight was slightly delayed. Relieved, the family prepared to sleep, completely unaware of the crisis that would unfold over the next few hours.
A Midnight Call of Terror for the Family
At around 1:00 AM, the father was awakened by his phone ringing. Seeing his daughter's name on the screen, he initially assumed she had landed safely in Noida and was calling to update them. However, when he answered, his heart sank. On the other end of the line, his daughter was sobbing and severely panicked. In the dead of night, at a place considered as secure as an international airport, she was left in a highly vulnerable situation. Sensing the gravity of the crisis, her mother took the phone from the father's trembling hands and tried to pacify the crying girl. The horrifying details shared by the daughter made it impossible for the parents to remain in Khurja even for another minute. The father immediately called a close friend, arranged a car, and began a frantic six-hour drive toward Lucknow Airport.
The Chain of Flight Cancellations by IndiGo
The student explained that when she arrived at the airport, she was informed of initial delays. After a long wait, IndiGo officially cancelled the scheduled 9:40 PM flight to Jewar. Ground officials then assured her that her travel plans would be rescheduled to an alternate flight to Delhi, which was originally slated for 11:20 PM but was running late and expected to depart after 1:00 AM. Agreeing to this change in hopes of making it to her exam on time, she waited further. However, to her utter dismay, the airline subsequently cancelled this second Delhi flight as well. Ground staff then informed her that she was being rescheduled once again, this time for a morning flight scheduled to depart at 7:20 AM.
Evicted from the Safe Zone of the Airport
Recognizing that taking the morning flight would guarantee she would miss her crucial examination, the student refused the offer. She requested the airline staff to immediately return her checked-in luggage so she could make alternative road travel arrangements to reach Noida. Instead of assisting a stranded young passenger in the middle of the night, the airline staff reportedly showed extreme insensitivity. She was ordered to leave the secure airport lobby immediately, with the staff claiming that her luggage would be handed over to her outside the terminal. Consequently, she was forced out into the unprotected public area outside the airport building, left to sit on the pavement alone in the middle of the night.
A Six-Hour Midnight Road Journey for Rescue
Driven by panic and parental protective instincts, the father and his friend drove through the night, covering hundreds of kilometers from Bulandshahr to the state capital. Upon arriving at Lucknow Airport in the early morning, they found the student still sobbing outside the terminal building. After consoling her, they placed her in the car and immediately drove toward Delhi. Fortunately, they managed to reach the destination in time, allowing the student to appear for her examination and preventing her academic career from being adversely affected.
Outrage on Social Media and Call for Intervention
Following the harrowing ordeal, the father shared their experiences on social media, appealing directly to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene. In his post, the father condemned the arbitrary and irresponsible behavior of airline companies operating from the state capital's airport. He urged the government to enforce strict guidelines and take appropriate action against the airline to ensure passenger safety, particularly so that other families do not have to endure such a distressing experience. Adding to the irony, IndiGo representatives called the student on Saturday morning, claiming her flight was ready and that they had automatically checked her in and sent her boarding pass. Despite the widespread attention to the incident, the family has only received an auto-generated template response from the airline, with no real accountability or explanation for the staff's behavior.
