A tragic incident unfolded at a major medical center in Pakistan's capital city of Islamabad, where a sudden fire broke out in the gynecology ward, claiming the lives of 15 newborn infants. Preliminary reports indicate that the fatal blaze was triggered by an air conditioner (AC) compressor explosion. At the time of the catastrophe, a total of 16 newborns were present inside the hospital nursery, and emergency personnel were able to rescue only one child.
Fire Erupted on 3rd Floor at 7 AM
The tragedy occurred at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). According to officials, the fire broke out around 7:00 AM on the third floor of the facility, where the gynecology department is located. Flames quickly spread through the area, filling the nursery with heavy smoke. Rescue operations were launched immediately upon receiving information about the outbreak to contain the emergency and secure the premises.
Rescue Operations and Cooling Procedures
To battle the fire, six fire tenders were rushed to the scene alongside four ambulances assigned for emergency support. Emergency responders managed to extinguish the blaze after intensive efforts. Firefighting teams subsequently initiated a cooling operation throughout the affected floor to prevent any re-ignition risks. Despite the rapid emergency response, 15 infants tragically succumbed, leaving grieving families in deep shock and mourning.
