Water levels in the country's major dams and reservoirs have been steadily falling, and the situation has grown so tense that ordinary citizens are now protesting against their own government demanding water, even as Pakistani leaders openly threaten India with war over the issue.
Leaders Raise the Temperature at an Islamabad Seminar
An international seminar on the Indus Water Treaty was organised in Islamabad, and experts from around the world were invited to attend. While most of the visiting experts largely stayed silent through the proceedings, Pakistani officials did not hold back. From Defence Minister Khawaja Asif to former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, several leaders spoke of being ready to shed blood over the waters of the Indus. They warned that if the international community fails to pressure India, millions of people in Pakistan could die, and added that Pakistan would not shy away from war if India does not restore the treaty.
The Treaty Was Suspended After the Pahalgam Attack
The roots of the crisis go back to last year, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan following the terror attack in Pahalgam. Alongside the suspension, India also accelerated work on long-stalled dam projects on the Indus and its tributaries in Kashmir. That combination has left Pakistan in a difficult spot, given how heavily the country depends on the Indus for both irrigation and drinking water.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's War of Words
Former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari described the Indus as Pakistan's lifeline, warning that Pakistan will not stay quiet if India blocks the water it believes it is entitled to. He accused India of using the suspension of the treaty to conspire to leave Pakistan's population thirsty, and insisted that Pakistan will not tolerate what he called India's bullying. Bhutto Zardari went as far as saying that every citizen of Pakistan is prepared to fight to the last breath for the water Pakistan is owed under the Indus agreement.
Environment Minister Musadik Malik Invokes Genocide
Pakistan's Environment Minister Musadik Malik went even further, claiming that the way India cut off Pakistan's water shows a clear intent to carry out genocide in Pakistan. He argued that the world must press India to honour the Indus Water Treaty, calling it one of the strongest water treaties anywhere in the world. According to Malik, the collapse of the treaty would bring disaster, since the breakdown of agreements of this scale often leads to genocide, and he appealed to the international community to intervene in the matter.
What's Really Driving the Panic
Behind all the rhetoric and the war talk lies a simpler fact: Pakistan is genuinely afraid of running short of water in the coming days. The falling water levels in its dams and reservoirs suggest that unless the Indus Water Treaty is restored soon, the situation on the ground could deteriorate further, directly affecting the daily lives of ordinary Pakistanis.
