Authorities in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province, have commenced extensive restoration work on the historic Nehru Park, a site deeply connected to the Indian freedom struggle. Situated in the Krishna Nagar neighbourhood, this public ground holds immense historical significance as the location where the Indian National Congress formally passed the landmark 'Purna Swaraj' resolution on December 31, 1929, during its famous Lahore session. That historic declaration asserted the demand for complete self-rule and total independence from British colonial dominion. Commemorating the monumental resolution at that very spot, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as Congress president at the time, unfurled the Indian flag.
Authorities Launch Comprehensive Revamp
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Ahmed Usman Javed, Director General of the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), officially confirmed that the government has undertaken a complete restoration of the historic venue and on-ground work is already underway. Javed explained that the horticulture division is currently laying fresh green turf and planting vibrant seasonal flower varieties to give the grounds an attractive appearance. Meanwhile, engineering teams have been tasked with installing adequate night-time lighting, setting up comfortable public benches, and adding swings for children so that families visiting the location can experience modern amenities in a welcoming environment.
Decorative Fountains and Heritage Preservation
To further augment the aesthetic charm of the site, authorities are installing multiple decorative water fountains across the premises. Javed emphasized that Nehru Park represents much more than a routine neighbourhood garden, pointing out its exceptional heritage value. He noted that while reviving it as an accessible green zone for the community remains essential, safeguarding its historic identity is a core institutional responsibility. The agency anticipates completing all scheduled landscaping and structural interventions within a short turnaround time.
Broader Plan Spanning Over 800 Community Parks
This targeted restoration forms part of a wider administrative blueprint aimed at revitalizing open recreational hubs throughout the metropolis. According to Javed, the initiative aligns with an expansive drive to restore and upgrade more than 800 smaller community parks under the jurisdiction of the PHA in Lahore. The development also comes against the backdrop of an earlier cultural initiative this year, wherein the Punjab provincial government announced plans to restore the pre-partition historical names of several streets and lanes across Lahore. However, that proposal was subsequently deferred following resistance and pressure from extremist elements.
