In the Govind Nagar area of south Kanpur, Congress leaders Vikas Awasthi and Prabhakar Pandey navigated a small boat through deeply flooded roads to register their strong opposition against the civic authorities. Through this striking demonstration, the leaders sought to convey that the city thoroughfares have deteriorated to a point where they are better suited for boating rather than vehicular traffic, while launching a fierce onslaught against the Kanpur Municipal Corporation.
Decade-Long Waterlogging Plagues Govind Nagar
The protesters alleged that while grand advertisements and tall claims are routinely publicized regarding the transformation of Kanpur into a smart city, the ground reality across several key neighborhoods turns miserable at the very first spell of rain. The waterlogging issue in Govind Nagar has persisted for nearly ten years. They stated that even modest rainfall leaves roads submerged under so much water that pedestrians, motorists, and local shopkeepers are subjected to immense hardships on a daily basis.
Air-Conditioned Offices Versus Flooded Realities
While pulling oars on the flooded tarmac, Vikas Awasthi and Prabhakar Pandey questioned why responsible officials never step out of their comfortable air-conditioned cabins when entire neighborhoods go underwater. They pointed out that the Kanpur Municipal Commissioner was recently reprimanded severely by the Chief Minister over administrative negligence, a development that drew widespread discussion across various social media platforms. The leaders emphasized that stagnant water lingers on major roads for hours after a downpour, disrupting public movement and directly hammering local commerce.
Business Hit Hard by Persistent Stagnation
The demonstrators highlighted that business owners in Govind Nagar suffer continuous financial losses due to water accumulation right outside their storefronts, which deters customers from visiting the market. On numerous occasions, water levels rise so high that driving vehicles across the stretch becomes extremely hazardous. Pointing to the prolonged struggle of local merchants, the leaders argued that the failure to establish a permanent drainage solution continues to paralyze commercial activity, with drainage taking four to five hours even after the rain stops.
Questions Raised Over Smart City Claims
Targeting the multi-crore spending under the smart city project, the Congress representatives argued that tall claims of development crumble when confronted with reality during every monsoon shower. They criticized Mayor Pramila Pandey and the municipal administration, stating that tall assertions regarding flood management and robust drainage systems completely contradict the grim conditions visible in Govind Nagar and other localities. They demanded a comprehensive review of drain cleaning and road grading to spare residents from wading through deep water.
