Following the passage of the Anti-Paper Leak Amendment Bill, which was introduced to address concerns surrounding the NEET-UG paper leak and student demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, opposition leaders swiftly shifted their focus to a new point of contention. Opposition members initiated an aggressive demonstration centered around alleged donation theft at the Ayodhya Ram Temple.
Priest Attire Demonstration and Symbolic Donation
The Parliament complex witnessed unusual scenes as Member of Parliament Pappu Yadav arrived dressed in traditional priest attire while carrying a donation collection box as a symbolic gesture of protest. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi actively participated by symbolically dropping money into the donation box. During the demonstration, Pappu Yadav was seen placing the contributed cash directly into his pocket.
Surrounding the central demonstration, several other opposition parliamentarians stood holding posters that read, "Why is Amit Shah missing from Parliament?" The exact connection between the Home Minister Amit Shah and the alleged Ram Temple donation theft case remained unclear, prompting questions regarding the broader strategic objective Rahul Gandhi intended to achieve through this demonstration.
BJP Sharp Reaction and Criticism of Protest Dignity
Members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded with strong condemnation regarding the opposition's conduct outside the house. BJP MP Jagdambika Pal accused Rahul Gandhi of consistently misleading the youth and repeatedly shifting core protest topics to launch unfounded personal attacks against the Home Minister. Pal highlighted that activist Sonam Wangchuk had already expressed appreciation for the anti-paper leak legislation, and both central and state governments had taken positive measures regarding the demands raised during earlier student agitations. Despite these government actions, Pal asserted, the opposition continued to disrupt parliamentary proceedings.
Additionally, BJP MP Brij Lal denounced Pappu Yadav's protest display, labeling the priest attire demonstration as a mere political gimmick. Brij Lal stated that parliamentarians are expected to wear attire that reflects the dignity and decorum of Parliament, urging members to uphold standard institutional norms rather than engaging in theatrical displays.
