Origin of the Disproportionate Assets Allegations
The legal battle stems from a formal complaint lodged by BJP worker Vignesh Shishir. The complainant alleged that Rahul Gandhi possesses wealth and property significantly exceeding his known and declared income streams. Based on these allegations, the complainant had sought a comprehensive investigation by federal probe agencies into the financial holdings in question.
Challenge to Allahabad High Court's May Ruling
The petition in the Supreme Court specifically targets the ruling delivered by the Allahabad High Court in May. In its order, the High Court had observed that when a representation or complaint is received, the allegations contained within it should be examined strictly in accordance with statutory provisions. The court noted that both the CBI and ED are expected to take appropriate measures while operating within their legal mandates. Following this directive, Rahul Gandhi approached the highest court to contest the order.
