A 24-year-old woman, Rashmi Kumari, has died under suspicious circumstances in Lahchora Khurd village, located within the Bayana police station jurisdiction in Rajasthan's Bharatpur district. Following the tragedy, her maternal family has alleged that her in-laws suffocated her to death using a pillow after their unfulfilled demands for dowry. Police authorities have formally registered a case of dowry death based on the complaint and initiated an investigation, while a medical board conducted an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
Family Alleges Brutal Harassment Over Cash and Motorcycle Demands
According to the police report submitted by Lokesh Kumar, a resident of Kothikheda in the Rudawal police station area, a joint wedding was solemnized on 27 November 2024. His sisters, Rashmi Kumari and elder sister Malti, were married to two brothers, Rakesh and Vipin, residing in Lahchora Khurd. The bride's family stated that they expended approximately 11 lakh rupees on the marriage festivities and gifts. Despite this expenditure, the in-laws allegedly began subjecting both sisters to physical and mental harassment shortly after the wedding. The complaint highlights that the in-laws were persistently demanding an additional sum of 5 lakh rupees along with a Bullet motorcycle, and Rashmi was continuously targeted because these demands remained unmet.
Hospital Referrals and Evidence of Physical Injury
The sequence of events escalated on 6 September when Rashmi's maternal family received urgent notification that her health had suddenly deteriorated. She was initially rushed to a local healthcare facility in Bayana and subsequently transferred to Bharatpur as her condition worsened. Given her critical state, doctors referred her to the SMS Hospital in Jaipur for specialized medical treatment. However, Rashmi succumbed during treatment on 7 September. Her family firmly maintains that her in-laws suffocated her with a pillow, citing visible friction and abrasion marks found across her neck area as physical proof of violence.
Impact on Infant Son and Formal Legal Proceedings
On Tuesday, an autopsy was performed at the Bayana mortuary by a newly constituted medical board to examine the physical evidence. The tragic demise has left the family in deep grief, particularly as Rashmi leaves behind a 9-month-old infant son named Mahir. Providing details on the enforcement actions, Bayana Station House Officer Ramgilas Gurjar confirmed that a case of dowry death has been registered following the formal complaint. Circle Officer Devendra Jakhar has been assigned to lead the probe. Law enforcement officials emphasized that further legal steps will be determined once the official post-mortem findings and investigative disclosures are evaluated.
