The booming online market for ancient antiquities has created an unprecedented biological safety hazard that reaches directly into logistics hubs and residential homes. An international study published in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Cultural Property warns that ancient Egyptian mummies and mummified human remains sold across social media platforms and online auction sites pose severe biohazard risks. Shipped via ordinary courier services without biological containment, these parcels present potential life-threatening health risks not only to private collectors but also to unsuspecting postal employees, delivery personnel, and customs inspection officers.
Unregulated Online Listings and Bare-Handed Handling Risks
Researchers conducted a detailed forensic analysis of 128 active online listings and auction posts across social media and digital marketplaces where mummified human tissue was being offered for sale. The data gathered during the investigation reveals a complete disregard for biosafety standards and cultural heritage protection laws. According to the study, severed human hands and feet represented the most frequently traded body parts. Furthermore, dried human skulls and severed heads accounted for more than half of all cataloged listings.
The study highlights that sellers routinely handled these ancient body parts with bare hands, completely foregoing protective gloves, face coverings, or sanitary precautions while capturing promotional photographs for online postings. Experts emphasize that even when a mummified specimen appears outwardly clean and free of visible decay, microscopic pathogens remain viable deep inside the tissue matrix. A seemingly inert biological artifact kept inside a residential home can function as a silent airborne contaminant, continuously releasing microscopic toxins into indoor air.
Severe Exposure Risks for Logistics and Postal Personnel
Lead author Dr Kirsty Squires, a professor of human bioarchaeology at Staffordshire University, explained that the proliferation of social media platforms has vastly accelerated the illegal commercialization of mummified remains. Sellers seeking quick profits routinely bypass international postal transport regulations and dangerous goods handling protocols. Mummified biological specimens are frequently packaged in flimsy, non-airtight cardboard boxes or plastic wrappings rather than sealed, leak-proof hazardous biological transport containers.
As noted by Dr Kirsty Squires, when these packages move through conventional postal infrastructure, couriers, postal handlers, and border clearance agents are unknowingly placed at severe risk. Logistics personnel handle and transport dangerous biological materials without any label indicating the lethal microscopic hazards concealed inside the cardboard packaging.
Historical Precedents of Fatal Mummy Fungal Infections
The lethal potential of fungal spores associated with ancient mummified remains is well documented in historical scientific literature. Modern scientific analysis confirms that microscopic fungal spores, particularly from the genus Aspergillus, can remain dormant in enclosed environments or underground chambers for hundreds or thousands of years. Upon disturbance or exposure to oxygen and moisture, these spores aerosolize rapidly and can be inhaled deep into human lungs, triggering fatal systemic respiratory failure.

These toxic heavy metals do not break down over time and remain fully active within the preserved tissues, creating severe chemical poisoning hazards for anyone handling the artifacts without specialized industrial protection.
The international research team comprised scholars from Staffordshire University, Vilnius University, Salento University, Messina University, and Adelaide University. The co-authors collectively urge major e-commerce platforms, social media companies, commercial courier networks, and border customs authorities to implement immediate bans and rigorous detection measures against the transport of human remains. Researchers stress that until strict legal frameworks and screening algorithms are instituted, the public must remain vigilant and immediately report any online sales of human or mummified remains to law enforcement agencies.
