The auspicious festival of Shardiya Navratri in 2025 will be observed across 10 days instead of the usual nine, owing to an astrological alignment where the Tritiya Tithi falls across two consecutive days. The festive cycle is scheduled to commence on Monday, September 22, 2025, and run through Wednesday, October 1, 2025, culminating in Vijayadashami celebrations the following day. Across eastern regions such as West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, the occasion transforms into a grand cultural celebration marked by elaborate public pavilions, community worship, and vibrant social gatherings dedicated to the feminine divine.
Daily Calendar and Ceremonial Observances
According to Dr Kunal Kumar Jha, head of the postgraduate department of astrology at Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, the festival will formally start on Monday, September 22, 2025, with Ghatasthapana and Kalash ritual consecration. On September 23, devotees will observe the Hemant Puja rites. As the festive week progresses, September 28 will feature Gaja Puja along with the evening ritual of Belnyoti. The following day, September 29, is earmarked for Patrika Pravesh and the mystical rites of Maharatri Nisha Puja. The festivities will culminate on October 2 with Aparajita Puja, sacred processions, and the celebration of Vijayadashami.
Sasthi Tithi: Idol Installation and Bilva Invocation
The core community phase of Durga Puja begins in earnest on Sasthi, falling on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Devotees offer prayers to the Katyayani form of the goddess on this date, which is traditionally favored for the installation of deities in decorated pavilions. The auspicious window for establishing the idols is set between 06:08 AM and 10:30 AM. Rituals on this day also include the Bilva Nimantran tradition, wherein the sacred wood apple leaf is symbolically invited, and the decorative arrangements of the pandals are unveiled to welcoming crowds. The ceremonial entry of Navapatrika also marks the foundational beginning of formal liturgical worship.
The Sacred Sandhi Puja and Chamunda Invocation
One of the most spiritually charged moments of the entire festival is the Sandhi Puja, scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, 2025, on Ashtami. This critical observance takes place during the transition juncture between Ashtami and Navami Tithi, spanning from 07:36 PM to 08:24 PM. During these 48 minutes, devotees invoke the Chamunda aspect of Goddess Durga. The ritual is characterized by the ceremonial offering of 108 lit lamps alongside 108 blue-and-pink lotus flowers, creating a profound atmosphere of devotion that commemorates the divine vanquishing of demonic forces.
Vijayadashami and Farewell Rituals
Representing triumph over the demon Mahishasura, the veneration of Goddess Durga reflects the victory of righteous authority and serves as a societal tribute to female empowerment. The festival draws to a close on Thursday, October 2, 2025, on Vijayadashami. After observing Aparajita Puja and performing final devotional prayers, community members will lead immersion processions, gently consigning the clay idols of Goddess Durga to rivers and lakes amidst music and seasonal farewell greetings.
