An incredibly promising opportunity has emerged for aspiring young sports enthusiasts in Kanpur, particularly those belonging to financially disadvantaged families. Children from economically weaker backgrounds will no longer need to worry about paying exorbitant fees to learn cricket in the city. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, 'The Sports Hub' (TSH), operated through a joint collaboration between the Municipal Corporation and Kanpur Smart City, is establishing a completely free cricket academy specifically for underprivileged children. Selected young talents will receive three months of professional cricket coaching absolutely free of cost.
Selection Trials and Seat Distribution Details
This commendable initiative is set to give wings to raw sporting talent hidden across the narrow streets of the city. Under the Sports Promotion Scholarship Scheme, the ninth training batch at TSH is scheduled to kick off on July 6. The selection process for this batch will begin with comprehensive trials starting from July 1. Through this competitive selection process, a total of 304 players will be chosen across 10 different sporting disciplines. Crucially, cricket has been included in this scholarship program for the very first time, with 44 seats dedicated specifically to cricket training, promising massive benefits for local aspiring cricketers.
Rigorous Selection Criteria and Verification Processes
To ensure that only genuine and deserving candidates benefit from this program, the authorities have instituted a highly transparent selection mechanism. Jagdish Yadav, the Additional Municipal Commissioner II of the Municipal Corporation, stated that this scheme directly aligns with the broader sports promotion vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The core objective is to identify talented but economically deprived children and provide them with top-tier athletic infrastructure.
To maintain absolute integrity, the administration will conduct on-site physical verifications of the homes of all applicants. This step is designed to guarantee that the scholarship benefits reach families that genuinely face financial hardships. To oversee this entire selection drive, a specialized seven-member coordination committee has been formed, consisting of seasoned administrative officials as well as respected sports experts.
World-Class Training Infrastructure and Legacy of Success
Representing Kanpur Smart City Limited, Mukesh Kumar Verma highlighted that TSH offers athletes state-of-the-art infrastructure, detailed fitness monitoring, curated dietary guidance, and coaching from highly experienced instructors. This professional environment has already propelled several trainees to excel and win accolades at district, state, and national levels. Notably, one of the athletes trained at this facility has even represented Uttar Pradesh in a national-level tournament.
Looking at the historical performance of the institution, TSH has already trained 2,016 athletes across its previous eight batches. These trainees have brought immense pride to the city, clinching 3 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze medals at various state-level competitions. At the district level, the medal tally is even more impressive, with trainees securing 52 gold, 41 silver, and 38 bronze medals. With the introduction of the cricket academy, expectations are high that Kanpur will soon produce world-class cricketers who will go on to represent both the state and the country on premier platforms.
