A young man from Thumbli village in the Shiv area of Rajasthan's Barmer district has shown that financial hardship cannot stand in the way of a determined dream. Lakharam, the son of a farmer and one of nine siblings, has scored 586 marks and secured All India Rank (AIR) 15283 in the NEET medical entrance exam.
A Childhood Shaped by Hardship
Lakharam grew up in a large joint family with no steady source of income, which made him the first member of his household to pursue higher studies. His father once earned a living carrying sacks as a labourer in Gujarat. He later found work at a facility back in the village, which brings in roughly Rs 12,000 a month. Money was tight enough that Lakharam himself had to take up daily-wage work during school vacations, yet he never let go of his books. He has said there were moments when the family's struggles nearly pushed him to give up studying altogether, but his parents kept encouraging him to hold on. The dream of easing his family's burden and becoming a doctor who could serve others kept him going.
A 14-Kilometre Walk to School, Every Single Day
Even getting an education was a daily challenge for Lakharam. For his early schooling, he had to walk nearly 14 kilometres each way to reach Bothiya Jagir. Despite the distance, his focus on studies never wavered. After clearing his 10th grade, he was selected for a programme called Fifty Villagers, which gave him free accommodation and support to pursue his goal. That opportunity gave his ambitions fresh momentum, and he began preparing seriously for NEET.
Success on the Second Attempt, Rank 7120 in OBC Category
His first attempt at NEET did not go as planned, but Lakharam refused to give up and prepared again. The second attempt finally paid off. He secured rank 7120 within the OBC category, while his overall All India Rank came in at 15283. With this result, his long-held goal of becoming a doctor is now within reach.
Credit Shared With Parents, Teachers and Mentors
Lakharam does not see this achievement as his alone. He credits his parents' sacrifices, guidance from his teachers, support from Dr. Bharat Saran, and the efforts of the entire team at Fifty Villagers Seva Sansthan for helping him get here. The young man from Thumbli has now become an example for countless students who see poverty and lack of resources as the biggest wall between them and their goals. His journey shows that steady effort and a family's belief can carry a person to their destination, however limited their means.
