A major infrastructure push across transportation, maritime trade, and scientific research is set to take place in Tamil Nadu as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Chennai on October 11. During this extensive visit, projects valued at more than Rs 13,000 crore will be officially launched and dedicated to the nation. The widespread initiatives encompass crucial sectors including metro urban transit, national highways, railway network modernization, seaport enhancements, and premier academic research facilities.
Chennai Metro Phase Two Inauguration and Train Ride
A central highlight of the Chennai itinerary is the inauguration of a key section under Chennai Metro Phase 2, executed at an investment of Rs 4,900 crore. The newly developed stretch between Poonamallee and Vadapalani will officially open for public transit, significantly alleviating urban road congestion and offering swift commuting alternatives across bustling city corridors. The Prime Minister will also personally travel aboard the metro from Porur Bypass to Poonamallee to inspect the new transit network.
Highway Upgrades and Rs 3700 Crore Roadway Projects
To enhance vehicular mobility across industrial belts and heritage centers, national highway projects worth Rs 3,700 crore will be launched. These include the dedication of the 36-kilometer-long Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur stretch along National Highway 744 and the opening of a 30-kilometer section of the Madurai Ring Road. In addition to improving inter-district transit speeds, the foundation stone will be laid for a four-lane bypass along the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur highway, boosting logistics and passenger movement across the Cauvery delta region.
Railway Redevelopment and Seaport Logistics
Rail infrastructure in the state is receiving an allocation of Rs 750 crore under modernization works. Five stations renovated under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, specifically Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakudi, and Namakkal, will be formally unveiled with upgraded passenger amenities. The maritime economy will also see momentum with new project launches across Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port, and V.O. Chidambaranar Port, paving the way for expanded cargo efficiency, private business investments, and substantial local employment generation.
IIT Madras Brain Research Facility and Cultural Visits
The tour also emphasizes cutting-edge science and social heritage. The Prime Minister will dedicate the advanced Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre established at IIT Madras, an institution designed to spearhead breakthroughs in neuroscience and brain mapping research. Furthermore, the schedule includes attending the 50th-anniversary golden jubilee celebrations of the Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya school. The Prime Minister will conclude the spiritual leg of his visit by offering prayers at the Jalakandeswarar temple.
