A deceptive racket targeting event rental businesses has been unearthed in the industrial hub of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where an uncle and nephew allegedly hired catering utensils and tent materials under the guise of family functions and disposed of them in the scrap market. Police have registered a criminal case and arrested the two suspects, identified as Sumit and Amit. Investigators state that the duo systematically targeted multiple rental businesses within an approximate five-kilometer radius, vanishing with goods collectively valued at nearly 9 lakh rupees.
Fabricated Celebrations Used to Win Merchant Trust
According to investigators, Sumit and Amit approached various tent house operators at different times, claiming they needed extensive supplies for upcoming weddings, community feasts, and social gatherings. Their manner of negotiation was convincing enough to lead business owners to accept their claims at face value without demanding collateral. Under these pretenses, they secured high-value catering equipment, including large commercial cooking cauldrons, heavy woks, platters, serving utensils, floor carpets, and essential decorative fabric installations.
Token Advance Payments Created an Illusion of Legitimacy
The alleged modus operandi relied heavily on psychological assurance. During the booking process, the suspects would pay a modest cash advance to the store owners. This partial upfront payment successfully removed any lingering doubts regarding settlement of dues, leading the vendors to release their expensive inventory without second thoughts. Over several days, equipment was systematically collected from various outlets, while shopkeepers remained confident that their property would be returned promptly once the stated celebrations ended.
Rental Inventory Diverted Directly to Scrap Yards
Police inquiries revealed that none of the rented materials ever made their way to any banquet hall, marquee, or feast location. Instead, the accused allegedly hauled the items directly to scrap buyers, selling them off for quick cash. While the tent house owners patiently awaited the return of their rental property, the duo was quietly offloading hundreds of kilograms of metal utensils and furnishings across different scrap collection points.
Failed Returns Unravel the Multi-Lakh Racket
The fraudulent operation began to unravel when the agreed-upon rental periods expired and the materials failed to arrive back at the warehouses. As affected business owners attempted to trace the hirers, word spread among local merchant circles. One after another, tent house operators across the surrounding five-kilometer belt realized that they had been approached by the same individuals using identical pretexts. An initial assessment revealed that missing kitchen gear, carpets, and accessories amounted to a collective loss of roughly 9 lakh rupees.
Police Step In and Apprehend Both Suspects
