Raising cows and buffaloes has turned into a serious source of household income across Gorakhpur and the wider Purvanchal region, not just a rural tradition anymore. But buying a good breed alone will not fill the milk pail faster. Veterinary doctor Dr Shivkumar Verma says the real difference comes from how animals are looked after once the weather turns extreme. Get the season-wise care right, he explains, and the milk flow from the bucket can noticeably pick up, along with the farmer's earnings.
Heat stress hits health and milk output directly
According to Dr Shivkumar Verma, animals suffer the most from heat stress during the peak summer months, and its impact shows up directly in both their health and their milk production. That is why farmers first need to track exactly what kind of weather their animals are dealing with and then plan the care routine around it. Sticking to old habits regardless of the season, he warns, almost always leads to a drop in milk output.
Feed and water need special attention
Feed choices should also change with the weather. Green fodder, dry fodder and a balanced feed mix need to be given in the right proportions so animals get enough energy and nutrition. Water quality deserves particular attention in summer, animals should always have access to clean, fresh and cool water. When needed, and on a veterinarian's advice, electrolytes, mineral mixtures or other supplements can be added to the water. This keeps the body's water and mineral balance intact and reduces the effect of the heat considerably.
Different breeds need different handling
Not every cow or buffalo can be cared for the same way, experts point out. Some foreign or high-yield breeds tolerate heat poorly, while indigenous breeds cope with it relatively better. That means every animal's feeding and care plan should factor in its breed, age and milk-yielding capacity rather than following a one-size-fits-all routine, since a single approach simply does not suit every animal.
Shed arrangements that make a difference
Proper ventilation inside the cattle shed helps guard against heat, and so does a shaded area, a cooling system, foggers, or simply sprinkling water at regular intervals. Animals should not be left tied up in the open during the peak afternoon sun, since that sharply worsens heat stress and can hurt both appetite and milk output.
Scientific management can lift dairy income
Dr Shivkumar Verma says that if farmers manage their animals scientifically according to the season, get them vaccinated on schedule and keep up with regular health checkups, the benefits show up quickly. Animals stay healthier, milk production rises, and the income from dairy farming improves noticeably as well. These small precautions, he adds, are what can make the dairy business considerably more profitable through the summer months and strengthen farmers' overall earnings.
