A tragic incident unfolded in Sijhari village under the Srinagar police station limits of Mahoba district, Uttar Pradesh, when a mud-brick residential structure collapsed following nearly eight hours of relentless heavy rainfall. The sudden structural failure trapped six family members beneath the heavy debris. While local villagers executed a swift rescue operation to save three young children and a woman, an elderly couple lost their lives after being buried deep under the rubble.
Relentless Rain Weakens Structural Integrity
The victims have been identified as 80-year-old Chatura Kushwaha, also known as Chaturbhuj, and his 75-year-old wife Budiya. The elderly couple was residing in the traditional mud structure along with their family members. On Wednesday, the region experienced torrential downpours lasting for almost eight hours continuously. The intense moisture absorption severely weakened the walls constructed with morrum soil mortar, leading to the sudden and total collapse of the house within moments.
Courageous Rescue Operation by Villagers
Upon hearing the deafening sound of the structure caved in, nearby residents immediately rushed to the scene. Realizing that members of the family were trapped beneath the fallen debris, villagers initiated an immediate rescue effort using available tools and manual labor. After strenuous efforts, the rescuers managed to pull three children and a woman out of the rubble safely. However, Chatura Kushwaha and Budiya were trapped under heavier structural debris, making their extrication particularly difficult and time-consuming.
Medical Response and Declaration of Death
Local authorities, including police personnel and emergency medical teams, were dispatched to the disaster site shortly after receiving information about the collapse. Rescue workers and police officers collaborated with villagers to clear the remaining mass of earth and bricks. Eventually, both Chatura Kushwaha and Budiya were brought out of the wreckage and transported to the Mahoba District Hospital in critical condition. Medical professionals at the facility examined the couple and pronounced them dead on arrival. The news of their demise triggered severe grief among family members and cast a deep pall of gloom over the entire village.

This fatal event underscores the vulnerability of rural mud and morrum houses during heavy monsoon spells across Uttar Pradesh. In another severe case in Muzaffarnagar district, five members of a single family lost their lives when their mud dwelling collapsed due to continuous heavy rains.
