A delay in the arrival of the monsoon has triggered severe heatwave conditions across Uttar Pradesh. Even the usually cooler Terai region, along with eastern parts of the state, is now reeling under intense heat. In response to the scorching conditions, the meteorological department has issued a yellow alert for heatwaves across 39 districts in the state.

Rising Temperatures Across Key Districts

On Sunday, several cities in Uttar Pradesh recorded exceptionally high temperatures. Banda emerged as the hottest location in the state, with the mercury hitting 42.6 degrees Celsius. Other cities followed closely, with Prayagraj recording 42.5 degrees Celsius, Varanasi touching 42.4 degrees Celsius, and Jhansi reaching 41.8 degrees Celsius. Regions in the Terai belt, including Bahraich and Lakhimpur Kheri, as well as eastern districts like Ghazipur and Varanasi, experienced relentless heatwave conditions for the second consecutive day.

Weather Forecast and Monsoon Expectations

According to Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre, the intense heatwave and scorching weather are expected to persist for the next three days across eastern, Terai, and other parts of the state. However, relief may be on the horizon as monsoon activity is projected to gain momentum after this period. Until then, residents in these areas will have to brave the high temperatures, with no major relief anticipated for at least the next two days.

List of 39 Districts Under Yellow Alert

The meteorological department's yellow alert covers a wide range of districts. The list of affected areas includes Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Deoria, Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Basti, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Kanpur Nagar, Unnao, Lucknow, Barabanki, Raebareli, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, and their adjoining regions.

What this means for you

  • Across India: Delays in the monsoon advancement can impact agricultural activities and increase power demand, requiring people to take extra precautions against rising temperatures.
  • In Uttar Pradesh: Residents in the 39 marked districts are advised to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, stay well-hydrated, and adopt measures to prevent heatstrokes.
