Following a prolonged period of public absence, former general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust and senior Vishva Hindu Parishad figure Champat Rai emerged publicly in Ayodhya. Walking alongside three to four supporters, he visited Tapaswi Chhawani to hold discussions with its presiding spiritual leader, Jagadguru Paramhans Acharya. When journalists present at the venue sought a statement, Rai refrained from speaking and motioned with his hands for the media to step back. His extended retreat from the public eye had followed intense controversy over land transactions and donation accounting during the Ram Temple construction, turning this sudden meeting and subsequent spiritual endorsements into a widely discussed topic across videos shared on social media.
Paramhans Acharya Defends Rai with Bat Analogy
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Jagadguru Paramhans Acharya offered an unqualified defense of Rai, praising his long-standing dedication to the temple project. "Shri Champat Rai Ji is a sage of this era, under whose leadership the entire Ram Temple was constructed," Paramhans Acharya stated, asserting that the broader Hindu community holds immense reverence and respect for his contributions. Addressing critics who had leveled accusations against the veteran leader, the spiritual head invoked a striking metaphor comparing detractors to nocturnal creatures. He remarked that certain elements in society resemble owls and bats, whose innate nature prevents them from comprehending the brilliance and majesty of the sun, implying that critics are fundamentally incapable of recognizing Rai's service to the cause.
Background of Land and Donation Controversies
Rai's tenure at the helm of the temple trust had been marred by severe allegations regarding land purchases and donation handling. Following the Supreme Court's landmark ruling on the Ayodhya dispute, the Central Government constituted the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust and appointed Rai as its general secretary. However, opposition political parties and several local figures later accused the trust of executing questionable real estate transactions. Critics pointed out that parcels of land in Ayodhya experienced valuation surges worth crores of rupees within minutes, alleging that cheap land was bought and immediately resold to the trust at exorbitantly inflated prices. Furthermore, questions were raised concerning the accounting of billions of rupees collected from devotees nationwide, alongside allegations of fraudulent receipts. Following these controversies, Rai was removed from the trust and subsequently retreated from public events and media appearances.
Decades in the Movement and Efforts to Restore Reputation
Insiders familiar with the Vishva Hindu Parishad emphasize that Rai dedicated decades to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement without personal gain, serving as one of its most prominent faces from its inception. Supporting this perspective, Jagadguru Paramhans Acharya maintained that allegations of financial irregularities were manufactured as part of a political agenda aimed at tarnishing the temple construction effort. He affirmed that the saint community remains firmly aligned with individuals who have devoted themselves to serving Ram Lalla. Within political and religious circles in Ayodhya, this renewed public visibility alongside explicit backing from prominent spiritual leaders is viewed as a calculated step to rehabilitate Rai's public standing and counter the accusations against him.
