Police in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district have made a significant breakthrough in the murder case of Gautam Maurya, a resident of Kant town. Investigating authorities have arrested Ashwini Kumar, the brother of the victim's ex-girlfriend, for his alleged involvement in conspiring the crime. According to senior law enforcement officials, the homicide was the culmination of a tense love triangle combined with persistent allegations of blackmail. Following his arrest and initial interrogation, Ashwini Kumar was formally presented before the court and remanded to judicial custody. This development follows the earlier arrest of primary suspect Sameer Ali and three of his associates, who were sent to jail on July 31.
Love Triangle and Alleged Blackmail Behind the Crime
Providing details regarding the conspiracy, Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Devendra Kumar revealed key findings from the ongoing investigation. Official inquiries established that the deceased, Gautam Maurya, previously maintained a romantic relationship with a woman residing in a neighboring village. Following their eventual breakup, the woman entered into a new relationship with Sameer Ali. However, Gautam reportedly continued to pursue, harass, and allegedly blackmail the woman, creating intense friction between the parties involved.
Distressed by the ongoing harassment, the woman confided in her brother Ashwini Kumar and Sameer Ali. Devendra Kumar stated that after learning of the situation, Ashwini Kumar and Sameer Ali jointly hatched a detailed plot to eliminate Gautam Maurya. Police investigations further revealed that the woman was fully aware of the murder plot, and detectives are continuing to gather evidence to ascertain the exact extent of her awareness and potential involvement in the planning process.
Chilling Instagram Status and Viral Video Followed Homicide
Prior to Ashwini Kumar's arrest, Shahjahanpur police had already apprehended main accused Sameer Ali along with his three accomplices, identified as Liyakat Ali, Tadeem, and Raja, sending all four to prison on July 31. Investigators revealed that Sameer Ali allegedly attacked Gautam Maurya with a sharp-edged weapon, causing fatal injuries. Shortly after committing the crime, the primary accused posted a chilling status message reading "Mar Diya" ("Killed Him") on the social media platform Instagram, triggering shock across the locality. Furthermore, a video clip of Sameer Ali circulated widely online, in which he claimed that he committed the murder because of his sister.
Widespread Public Outrage and Highway Blockade
News of Gautam Maurya's brutal murder sparked intense anger and communal tension throughout Kant town. On August 1, thousands of local residents, grieving family members, and representatives of various Hindu organizations organized massive public demonstrations. Protesters blocked the vital Palia-Lucknow highway for nearly eight hours, demanding immediate justice and strict legal action against all co-conspirators. Traffic along the arterial route came to a complete standstill during the day-long blockade. As emotions ran high, portions of the crowd attempted to target commercial shops belonging to members of the Muslim community; however, prompt intervention by police personnel successfully repelled the crowd and thwarted any violence.
120 Police Personnel and PAC Deployed to Maintain Order
To ensure a thorough investigation, Shahjahanpur Superintendent of Police Saurabh Dixit formed three specialized police teams dedicated to gathering physical and forensic evidence. ASP Devendra Kumar emphasized that law enforcement agencies are committed to prosecuting everyone involved, stating, "Our teams are advancing the investigation and collecting evidence, and strict action will be taken against anyone found involved in this case."
As a precautionary measure to prevent any further escalation, heavy security forces remain stationed across Kant town. Authorities have deployed two companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary alongside approximately 120 police personnel. Senior law enforcement officers, including the Circle Officer (Sadar), are personally overseeing field operations and monitoring the deployment. Police officials confirmed that the current situation in Kant town remains peaceful and under firm control.
