A special mid-day meal celebration on Teachers Day inside a Jalpaiguri district school quickly escalated into chaos after a confrontation between the headmaster and a group of students resulted in a violent physical clash. What began as a festive occasion soon drew widespread concern and prompted immediate administrative intervention across the region.
The Escalation of Violence
The incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon when students occasionally entered the kitchen area, triggering anger from headmaster Dharmachand Barui, who allegedly assaulted several tenth-grade students. This immediate action caused intense tension on campus, leading an angry group of students to surround and retaliate against the headmaster. The resulting altercation left him with head injuries, requiring police intervention to rescue him and transfer him to Jalpaiguri Medical College, where he is currently receiving treatment. A group of students later claimed the headmaster was targeted because students involved in the food incident had managed to avoid being caught. Following the emergence of video footage capturing the clash, authorities ordered a comprehensive investigation.
Official Inquiry and Inspection
Following the disturbing events, the education department ordered a formal inquiry into Tuesday's violence at the district school. Acting under instructions from school education department principal secretary Binod Kumar, district school inspector Sujit Sarkar visited the campus on Wednesday to speak with teachers and determine the exact trigger for the dispute. Sarkar stated, "मुझे घटना की जांच करने और रिपोर्ट सौंपने का निर्देश दिया गया है, और मैं तय समय के भीतर जांच रिपोर्ट सौंप दूंगा।" Authorities are also investigating whether any prior grievances existed against Barui that might have fueled student resentment.
Ministerial Visit and Broader Context
Considering his current health condition, the headmaster has been granted a 15-day leave. School education minister Dipak Barman is scheduled to visit the school on the coming Friday to assess the situation firsthand and is expected to meet with headmasters from surrounding institutions. Similar incidents have previously surfaced in the state, such as when a teacher severely beat students during Teachers Day in Bankura district. Other tragic incidents near the holiday have also affected the education community, including a home tutor who died in a collision with a jackal while returning home.
