The building houses the office of Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. Civic staff initiated procedures to detach the large signboard bearing the name 'All India Trinamool Congress' installed on the facade of the structure.
Upon noticing the municipal activity, party representatives and workers assembled at the entry points to block the administrative team. Party leaders questioned the legality of the drive and requested officials to halt the removal. Representatives claimed they spent nearly an hour and a half attempting to reason with the civic team and police officials to seek a peaceful resolution. However, when discussions yielded no result, police personnel began moving inside the structural access points. This triggered a physical scuffle near the main stairway, during which Derek O'Brien was pushed and slipped down several steps.

Addressing media personnel shortly after the incident, MP Derek O'Brien strongly contested the legitimacy of the municipal action and raised serious procedural objections regarding the notice presented by the authorities.
"At 3:30 PM, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation brought an unsigned notice, and later over 150 police personnel entered the building."
ELaborating on the procedural flaws, O'Brien noted that while the notice explicitly mentioned an attached photograph, no such image was provided, nor did the document specify precise details regarding the infraction. He further alleged that over 150 police personnel forcibly entered the private office premises without valid authorization or judicial warrants. He accused the police of manhandling party workers and senior leaders who were standing on the stairwell.
Connecting the timing of the raid to the political calendar, the Trinamool MP asserted that the action was deliberately staged to disrupt the party's preparations for its annual student wing rally scheduled for the following day. He attributed the administrative drive to political pressure exerted by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allied groups, alleging that police also unlawfully detained 10 to 15 party workers from the site.
Abhishek Banerjee’s Reaction and Official Police Stand
Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee issued a sharp rebuke against the state administrative machinery following the incident. Expressing his view on X (formerly Twitter), he pointed to a breakdown of constitutional norms.
"West Bengal is witnessing the steady erosion of constitutional governance and a worrying drift toward a police state."
Banerjee added that when executive power operates without adherence to constitutional boundaries, the judiciary remains the sole institution capable of restoring accountability and protecting democratic rights. On the other hand, Kolkata Police officials confirmed that 12 individuals were taken into custody from the Camac Street site for obstructing public servants in the discharge of their official duties. Police authorities stated that further legal processes were underway and additional details regarding the detentions would be disclosed shortly.
