A grand patriotic march swept through Kharagpur on Sunday as part of the nationwide celebrations leading up to Independence Day. The rally was organised to honor the sacrifices of India's freedom fighters and to rally citizens behind the national flag. Local residents gathered in large numbers alongside Sadar MLA and West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh, who participated in the march and paid homage to the tricolor.
Statewide Expansion of the Har Ghar Tiranga Initiative
Addressing the crowd in Kharagpur, Minister Dilip Ghosh emphasized that this local rally marks just the beginning of a broader campaign across West Bengal. Aligned with the Central Government's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' program, the state-wide drive aims to ensure that the national flag reaches every single household in every district. Following the inauguration of the movement in Kharagpur, sequential rallies and march-past events are scheduled to unfold in various districts. Ghosh also highlighted that a central event scheduled for August 10 in Kolkata will see thousands of participants assembling to demonstrate national unity.
Massive Flag Distribution and Kolkata Mega March
The West Bengal government is preparing for extensive participation in this patriotic drive. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently announced that 70 lakh national flags are being distributed across the state through the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. A key highlight of the campaign will take place on August 10 in the heart of Kolkata, where a massive Tiranga Rally will be flagged off from the statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and proceed towards Gate Number 1 of the Birla Planetarium. Official estimates suggest that approximately 50,000 citizens will join this historic march. State government offices and educational institutions will carry out these events strictly according to official guidelines.
Commemorating 150 Years of Vande Mataram
Initially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 under the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' banner, the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' movement has consistently sought to instil deep patriotic pride among citizens. A special focus of this year's observance is marking the 150th anniversary of 'Vande Mataram'. To ensure grassroots participation, local administration units at the district, block, and panchayat levels are organising bike and bicycle rallies, tricolor-themed music concerts, public illuminations, and interactive activities such as the "Selfie with Tiranga" initiative.
