Deepening their strategic alignment in the Indo-Pacific region, India and Japan have agreed to expand their defense partnership through enhanced maritime security and technological collaboration. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met with Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi on October 28 on the sidelines of the ADMM-Plus meeting in Cebu, Philippines. During the talks, both leaders underscored their shared commitment to maintaining a free, open, and peaceful Indo-Pacific.
Naval Collaboration and Mine Countermeasures
A significant portion of the discussions centered on bolstering maritime security and naval cooperation. The two ministers explored prospects for joint development and production in designing and building naval vessels, leveraging Japan's technological expertise alongside India's manufacturing capabilities. Furthermore, both sides deliberated on upgrading capabilities to detect and neutralize maritime landmines, addressing a critical aspect of regional naval readiness.
This strategic push is further supported by high-level military exchanges, including the recent visit of the Deputy Chief of the Indian Navy to Japan. Both nations aim to forge a framework that meets their strategic requirements and operational needs across maritime domains, ensuring seamless cooperation between their respective armed forces.
Expanding Air Force Drills and Defense Industry Ties
Beyond naval cooperation, the partnership has seen substantial progress in military aviation. Both leaders reviewed the ongoing cooperation between their air forces, highlighting the recent 'Veer Guardian 26' exercise, which marked the historic first visit of Japanese fighter aircraft to India. This drill coincided with the visit of the Chief of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force to India, cementing ties between the two air arms.
Industrial cooperation has also gained momentum, following the successful convening of the India-Japan Defense Industry Forum in Tokyo, which saw participation from approximately 40 companies representing both nations. This platform is designed to foster deeper collaboration between defense manufacturers and supply chains.
Upcoming Diplomatic and Ministerial Summits
Looking ahead, Rajnath Singh and Shinjiro Koizumi agreed to accelerate preparations for key diplomatic engagements scheduled for later this year in Tokyo. The upcoming agenda includes the fourth India-Japan Foreign and Defense Ministerial '2+2' dialogue, alongside a dedicated bilateral meeting between the two defense ministers to chart the future course of the Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
