A major counter espionage investigation has uncovered a cross border intelligence ring operating inside critical naval infrastructure, resulting in the formal arrest of two suspects. The detained individuals include an employee attached to the Visakhapatnam naval base and a contract driver who handled transport duties for naval officers. Investigators monitoring the conspiracy have flagged a total of 18 suspects under deep scrutiny, with as many as 13 of them serving as naval personnel whose alleged involvement presented severe risks to the country's defense apparatus.
Arrest of Naval Base Employee and Driver
According to official disclosures made by the Andhra Pradesh Police on Tuesday, the two arrested individuals have been identified as Pradeep Mukherjee and Annam Sai Varaprasad. While Mukherjee worked at the naval base in Visakhapatnam, Varaprasad was engaged as a contractual driver servicing vehicles used by naval officials in the same port city. State Counter Intelligence officials stepped in following precise intelligence inputs revealing that the suspects were in direct, ongoing communication with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives, collaborating in an espionage framework harmful to national security.
Suspects Remanded to Judicial Custody
After establishing a clear prima facie link between the suspects and foreign handlers, investigators executed formal arrests while keeping the remaining suspected persons under active inquiry. Pradeep Mukherjee was apprehended recently from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu before being brought in for legal proceedings. Both Mukherjee and Varaprasad were subsequently presented before a court in Vijayawada, which ordered them to be placed in judicial custody until October 14. Both accused are presently lodged inside the Vijayawada district jail as legal proceedings continue.
Operation Firewall-2026 Coordinates Across 10 States
Tracking the entire trail of leaked data required a massive inter-agency initiative coordinated across 10 states under the banner of 'Operation Firewall-2026'. The Counter Intelligence Cell led the multi-state effort to identify every contact point connected to the overseas operatives. Inquiries showed that sensitive and classified details regarding naval establishments, defense bases, and other vital strategic locations in Visakhapatnam and other parts of India were being transmitted using encrypted communication channels. Law enforcement agencies have seized critical electronic gadgets from the suspects, while ongoing forensic investigations seek to uncover the full extent of the compromised material.
