Union Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed that the central government is formulating a graded driving license system designed to penalize motorists who repeatedly break traffic laws. This proposed initiative aims to instill greater driving discipline and significantly decrease the number of road accidents and related casualties on Indian roads.
Deduction of Penalty Points and License Suspension
Under the upcoming system, every driving license will be integrated with a point-based monitoring mechanism. Whenever a driver commits a traffic violation, a designated number of points will be deducted from their license profile. If an individual continues to disregard traffic regulations, the progressive loss of points will trigger strict administrative actions. Ultimately, drivers who exhaust their complete quota of points will face automatic license suspension or permanent cancellation, barring them from operating vehicles until specific remedial measures are met.
Standardizing Driver Training to International Levels
Beyond point deductions, the government is focusing on reforming the foundational training that new motorists receive. The Ministry plans to upgrade existing driver instruction programs so that they align directly with international safety standards. By modernizing training centers, refining test procedures, and revising curriculum guidelines, authorities intend to ensure that every licensed individual possesses comprehensive knowledge of road signals, vehicle control, and defensive driving techniques.
Upgrading the Overall Crash Safety Ecosystem
To mitigate the severity of injuries and lower mortality rates during traffic collisions, central authorities are simultaneously enhancing the broader crash safety infrastructure.
