In Begusarai district's Bariyarpur village, under the Balia police station area, officers cornered and arrested two notorious criminal brothers, Sonu Singh and Monu Singh, along with weapons. A video from the raid has since gone viral on social media, showing a scuffle between the police party and the two accused, and it has now raised questions about whether officers themselves tucked a pistol into the brothers' waistbands.
What the viral video actually shows
The clip circulating online shows several policemen, some in uniform and some without, holding down two young men. At one point, an officer is seen holding a pistol and appearing to try to place it in one of the accused's waistband. Bystanders can be heard objecting in the background, telling the officer not to tuck the pistol into the waist. That moment is what triggered the wave of criticism against the police action.
A children's quarrel that snowballed into gunfire
At a press conference held at Balia police station after the arrests, Balia DSP Subodh Kumar laid out the full sequence of events. He said that on June 20, 2026, a dispute between children in Bariyarpur village escalated into a clash between two groups. One side then called in Sonu and Monu, and the two brothers opened fire at the spot. A spent cartridge case was recovered from the scene, and a case was registered on that basis. Sonu and Monu had been on the run ever since that case was filed.
Tip-off, a cordon, and a struggle to make the arrest
According to DSP Subodh Kumar, police received a tip-off that Sonu and Monu were near their home with weapons and could carry out another incident. Acting on that information, a team was formed and the house was cordoned off. As the police team moved in, the two brothers tried to flee and, while running, aimed a weapon at the police. Officers then had to struggle for a considerable time before finally overpowering and arresting both brothers. A search recovered a pistol, a cartridge and a knife from them.
DSP calls the pistol allegation baseless
Asked about the viral video and the allegation that police forcibly tucked a weapon into the brothers' waist, DSP Subodh Kumar rejected the claim outright. He said that during the raid, it was the accused who aimed a pistol at the police, and officers managed to wrest the weapon away from him only after considerable effort. He added that the allegations being made are entirely baseless. The DSP also noted that Sonu Singh and Monu Singh are both highly notorious criminals with multiple prior cases against them, Sonu Singh facing 11 criminal cases and Monu Singh facing 9. Police say the arrest of the two brothers is expected to help resolve several serious pending cases in the area.
