A major accident has been reported from Vaishali district in Bihar, where a boat carrying ten people capsized in the Ganga near pillar number 9 of the Mahatma Gandhi Setu. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when the boat, travelling from Raghopur's Teresia area towards Digha, got caught in a strong current near the bridge and went out of control. As soon as news of the accident spread, district administration and police teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Vaishali's District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police Shubhank Mishra are both camping at the site, personally overseeing the rescue effort.
Accident occurred in Tejashwi Yadav's assembly seat and Chirag Paswan's Lok Sabha constituency
The spot where the boat capsized falls within Chirag Paswan's parliamentary constituency and Tejashwi Yadav's assembly constituency. Full details of all ten passengers who were aboard the boat are yet to emerge, but chaos broke out along the riverbank right after the mishap. Local residents and divers reached the site and joined the search for the missing passengers, while the administration launched a search operation in the Ganga to trace and rescue everyone who is still unaccounted for.
Boat lost control after hitting a boulder
According to eyewitnesses, the boat was passing through the Tersia Diara area when it struck a boulder near pillar number 9 of the Mahatma Gandhi Setu. The impact threw the boat off balance, and it began sinking in the fast-moving current of the Ganga almost immediately. The accident unfolded so quickly that the passengers on board had no time to steady themselves and were thrown straight into the water. People near the site raised an alarm right away, alerting others nearby, after which the rescue operation got underway.
Search and rescue operation continues
Teams from the district administration, police and local divers are currently combing the river in a joint search operation. Official confirmation of how many people have been rescued safely and how many remain missing is still awaited. For now, the administration's priority is to pull every missing passenger out of the river safely.
