India's High Commissioner in Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, has been granted cabinet rank, a decision conveyed by the Home Ministry through a memorandum. On the surface it looks like a simple administrative change, but the timing and the context turn it into a loud diplomatic statement. Ties with Bangladesh have always sat at the heart of India's foreign policy, and the relationship has seen sharp tension and swings in recent times.
After Sheikh Hasina's government fell, Mohammad Yunus took charge, and Tariq Rahman has now become the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh. In this shifting landscape, India wants to put the relationship back on track. By elevating Trivedi, New Delhi is sending a direct message about just how much weight it places on the Dhaka mission. And folded into that single decision is a pointed signal for China and Pakistan as well.
What cabinet rank really means
Dinesh Trivedi is no ordinary diplomat. He has previously served as a minister in the central government and is not a regular IFS officer. He was appointed India's new High Commissioner in Dhaka in April, and he has now been given a status equal to that of a Union Cabinet minister.
This rank works purely at the protocol level. No permanent change has been made to the Table of Precedence. Even so, it is seen as a major diplomatic signal, because an ambassador is rarely handed a rank this high. The move gives Trivedi the authority to negotiate at the very top level in Dhaka. He will now be given greater precedence in meetings with the President or the Prime Minister. It is clear that New Delhi is treating this mission as a top priority.
Tariq Rahman's China trip and India's unease
Since the change of power in Bangladesh, the situation there has shifted rapidly. Sheikh Hasina's government collapsed suddenly in 2024, after which an interim government was formed under Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus. During that period, relations between India and Bangladesh turned distinctly bitter. Now a new democratic government is in office under Tariq Rahman.
Rahman is currently in China on an important visit, and that is exactly what worries India. Bangladesh is rapidly deepening its ties with China and Pakistan, two countries working to shrink India's influence across South Asia. That is precisely why India has had to strengthen its own power play, and Trivedi's elevated stature is part of this deliberate strategy.
The Teesta project and the fighter jet threat
China has been steadily expanding its foothold in neighbouring Bangladesh. New reports suggest Dhaka is now preparing to buy Chinese fighter jets, the same aircraft Pakistan has used before. In 2025, India and Pakistan fought a short four-day war known as Operation Sindoor, and Pakistan deployed these very Chinese jets at the time. A deal like this could become a serious threat to India's national security.
On top of that, China has its eyes on the Teesta river project. Beijing is showing strong interest in developing it, and the Teesta issue has always been deeply sensitive for New Delhi. At such a delicate moment, Trivedi's appointment takes on even greater importance, because India is determined to keep its neighbour from slipping into China's grip.
Has any ambassador been given this rank before
In the long history of diplomacy, such a step is not entirely new, but it is seen in very few cases. Decisions like this are taken when a diplomatic mission needs to be given political weight. Over the years, a handful of heavyweight leaders have been given this special rank.
When V K Krishna Menon was made High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, he too was given cabinet status to work there. Similarly, Durga Prasad Dhar was appointed ambassador to the Soviet Union and received this honour in 1975. Inder Kumar Gujral and Triloki Nath Kaul also held this rank in the Soviet Union. In the United Kingdom, Dr L M Singhvi was honoured with cabinet rank as well. Dinesh Trivedi's name has now joined this select list.
Tourist visas reopen for Bangladeshis
India has resumed tourist visas for ordinary Bangladeshi citizens. The service had been fully suspended after the major uprising of July 2024, and that strict suspension stayed in place for nearly two years. On Thursday, Trivedi made a big announcement at the Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka, home to a large Indian Visa Application Centre, one of India's biggest visa assistance hubs. He also reviewed the ongoing visa process there. ‘I am very happy to announce the resumption of the general travel visa service,’ Trivedi said.
According to the announcement, tourist visa applications will reopen from 28 June 2026, with the facility available at five visa centres, including the capital Dhaka.
