Tensions within the ruling Janata Dal United escalated as the ongoing rivalry between Mokama MLA Anant Singh and Member of Legislative Council Neeraj Kumar spilled into the open. Visiting Lakhisarai, Union Minister and Munger Member of Parliament Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, addressed the situation through measured remarks. Without naming either politician directly, he indicated that when two competing individuals both happen to be his voters, taking sides is out of the question. However, he emphasized that if both sides express genuine readiness for an amicable settlement, he is fully prepared to step in and facilitate negotiations between them.
Sanjay Jha Entrusted the Dispute to the Munger Parliamentarian
The party leadership stepped into the matter on Friday when Janata Dal United working president Sanjay Jha briefed reporters on the organizational friction. Jha noted that the top leadership is closely tracking the development between Anant Singh and Neeraj Kumar. Because the political geography of the friction falls within the territorial boundaries of the Munger Lok Sabha constituency, the party formally tasked the local parliamentarian Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh with the responsibility of bridging the divide and diffusing tensions as swiftly as possible.
Open Defiance by Backing Jan Suraaj Candidate in Council Polls
The internal factionalism crossed a critical threshold on Thursday when Anant Kumar Singh openly demonstrated defiance against his own party apparatus. He personally attended the nomination filing of Anuj Singh, a Bihar Legislative Council candidate fielded by the Jan Suraaj Party. A large gathering of his supporters accompanied him during the nomination proceedings. The Mokama legislator made no secret of his objective, plainly declaring that he actively seeks the electoral defeat of Neeraj Kumar, who is seeking re-election as the Janata Dal United candidate from the Patna Graduates constituency. Anant Singh also led a large procession backing the Jan Suraaj contender and told reporters that he was unconcerned about the party stance because his rival had opposed him repeatedly, leaving him determined to deliver a fitting response.
A Decade-Long Rivalry Traced Back to the 2015 Assembly Elections
The political hostility dividing Anant Singh and Neeraj Kumar is rooted deeply in the 2015 Bihar legislative assembly elections. During that contest, Anant Singh parted ways with the Janata Dal United to contest the Mokama assembly seat as an independent candidate. In response, the party pitted Neeraj Kumar directly against him on that same constituency. Despite the organized challenge, Anant Singh comfortably retained the seat by a commanding margin. The electoral clash sparked a bitter personal and political animosity that has persisted between the two figures ever since.
Alliance Seat Dynamics in Upcoming Legislative Council Elections
The dispute unfolds against the backdrop of crucial biennial elections for eight seats of the Bihar Legislative Council scheduled toward the end of this month. Under the established seat-sharing arrangement across the ruling alliance, the Janata Dal United is contesting four seats, while its partner the Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated candidates across the remaining four seats. With Neeraj Kumar seeking another term on the party ticket in the Patna Graduates constituency, Anant Singh public campaign for a Jan Suraaj rival has created an unprecedented campaign complication for the ruling alliance.
