A devastating maritime accident near the scenic Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam claimed the lives of 15 Indian tourists on Saturday. The incident occurred when a vessel carrying a total of 36 passengers capsized in the open waters. Among those on board were 32 Indian vacationers and four local crew members. Prompt rescue operations managed to pull 21 survivors to safety, but 15 individuals could not be saved. The victims had traveled to Vietnam from India as part of a corporate incentive trip organized by Lava Mobiles, a prominent Indian smartphone manufacturer. Phu Quoc, the largest island in Vietnam, is globally renowned for its pristine white-sand coastlines, vibrant coral reefs, and island-hopping tours, making it a highly sought-after destination for international travelers.
Details of the Corporate Vacation
The tourists who met with this tragic fate were all associated with Lava Mobiles as retail dealers, distributors, or staff. Ashish Kumar, a Lava distributor hailing from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, shared details of how the group’s travel itinerary was structured. According to him, the company had organized this recreational outing for its channel partners and divided the attendees into multiple batches to tour the island. The group had arrived in Vietnam on July 9 and was scheduled to fly back to India on Sunday morning. The tragedy struck around 1:30 PM local time on Saturday. Ashish Kumar recounted that the boat had barely traveled 300 to 400 meters away from the shore when it suddenly capsized. The passengers were enjoying the scenic views and taking photographs, completely unaware of the impending danger, when the boat suddenly overturned in a flash.
A Witness Account of the Sudden Overturn
Nirmal Kumar, a survivor of the accident from Palani in Tamil Nadu, recalled the horrifying moments when the vessel went under. He explained that the speed boat they were traveling in capsized within a matter of seconds, giving no one on board any time to react or put on safety gear properly. Initial assessments suggest that the combination of turbulent sea waves and possible overloading of the vessel beyond its safe passenger capacity led to the rapid capsize. A vast majority of the passengers on the vessel belonged to Tamil Nadu. While many were rescued, two of the survivors are currently hospitalized in critical condition, with local medical teams closely monitoring their recovery.
Corporate Statement and Assistance Measures
In the wake of this immense tragedy, Lava Mobiles issued an official statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of its partners and staff. The company confirmed that 14 of its channel partners and one internal employee of the Lava team lost their lives in the unfortunate boating accident near Phu Quoc Island. Expressing condolences, the company stated that this is an unimaginable tragedy and that they stand in solidarity with the grieving families during this difficult period. Lava Mobiles added that its leadership is in constant communication with the Indian Embassy in Vietnam as well as the local Vietnamese administration to fast-track the repatriation of the deceased. Dedicated support teams from Lava have been deployed in both India and Vietnam to assist the families with administrative procedures and immediate support.
Government Response and Repatriation of Victims
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi confirmed the regional identities of the deceased tourists. Of the 15 victims, 10 hailed from Tamil Nadu, three were from Andhra Pradesh, and two belonged to Kerala. Following the confirmation, the state governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala declared that they are working in close coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs and the central government to ensure the swift repatriation of the remains to their respective hometowns. Top national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, expressed their profound grief over the accident. State chief ministers have also extended their condolences and promised comprehensive assistance to the bereaved families during this hour of grief.
