Chinese TV icon's singing dream turns into a social media backlash and a cancelled concert

Longtime Happy Camp host She Na wanted to launch a solo singing career, but online mockery over her voice led organizers to cancel her Beijing concert and refund every ticket.

She Na, one of China's most recognisable television faces, is facing heavy criticism online after chasing a long-held dream of becoming a singer, a dream that has now cost her a scheduled Beijing concert.

Two decades as one of China's biggest TV names

According to a report, She Na has hosted China's hit television show Happy Camp for more than 20 years. Known for her lively anchoring, quick wit and energetic style, she is regarded as one of the biggest television personalities in China.

From TV stardom to a shot at singing

Despite her enormous success on television, She Na had long wanted to become a singer. In April, she announced her first solo concert tour on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, saying she had finally got the chance to fulfil that dream.

Chengdu show sells out in minutes

Tickets for her first concert, held in Chengdu, sold out within minutes, a response that reportedly surprised She Na herself. The show, held in May, drew an enthusiastic crowd, and several big stars turned up as guests, adding to its buzz. Encouraged by the response, she went on to announce a wider concert tour covering Beijing and other cities across China.

Backlash begins the moment the new tour is announced

As soon as the new concert dates were announced, social media users began questioning her singing ability. Many argued that while She Na is an excellent TV host, her voice isn't strong enough to headline a major concert. Some claimed the Chengdu show succeeded because of the famous guest stars who shared the stage with her, not because of her singing. Others went further, alleging that she was chasing the tour for the money her fame could bring rather than out of genuine passion for music.

Beijing concert cancelled, full refunds promised

Tickets for the Beijing concert were priced between 380 and 1180 yuan, roughly Rs 5,300 to Rs 16,500 in Indian currency. But as the criticism intensified, organizers abruptly announced that the Beijing concert had been cancelled, along with a promise to refund every ticket buyer in full.

Reason for the cancellation still unclear

She Na and her team have not yet explained why the concert was called off. It also remains unclear whether government officials played any role in the decision.
