A deluge of heavy rainfall has brought Delhi and its neighboring regions to a standstill. The downpour, which began late at night, has severely impacted life across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad. The continuous rain has caused significant disruptions, making it difficult for residents to navigate flooded streets and complicating commutes for office-goers, who are finding it challenging to even step out of their homes.
IMD Rainfall Data and Weather Forecast
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the capital recorded 34.9 millimeters of rainfall within a short window of three hours, specifically between 2:30 AM and 5:30 AM. Looking ahead, the weather department has issued a fresh alert for the coming few hours. Forecasters expect heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong wind gusts, to persist across the region. Officials have urged the public to stay alert and avoid non-essential travel during these inclement conditions.
Impacted Areas and Waterlogging
The impact of the heavy rain is visible across several parts of Delhi. In localities like Munirka, Pitampura, and Shalimar Bagh, significant waterlogging on roads has slowed vehicular traffic to a crawl. The situation is mirrored in the surrounding National Capital Region. In Ghaziabad, areas like Shyam Park Extension in Sahibabad, along with several sectors in Noida, are experiencing conditions that resemble flooding, causing massive inconveniences to residents trying to head to work.
Administrative Response and School Holidays
In response to the mounting challenges posed by the weather, the administration remains in an alert mode. Traffic police are continuously monitoring high-risk areas to manage congestion and prevent accidents. Recognizing the risks associated with the relentless rain, Ghaziabad District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar has declared a holiday for all students from classes 1 to 12, regardless of their school board, for today, July 9.
Active Monsoon Conditions
Meteorologists at the IMD have indicated that the monsoon is currently highly active, suggesting that intermittent rainfall will likely continue throughout the day. Video evidence from areas like Munirka and Pitampura shows streets submerged under water, highlighting the severity of the drainage issues. The authorities continue to advise residents to practice caution and remain prepared as they monitor the ongoing weather patterns across the region.
