Tragedy has struck Spanish football following the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel at the age of 30. The striker passed away in the hospital on Tuesday morning after suffering catastrophic injuries during a Spanish second-division fixture. His death follows a violent on-field collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a match on Monday, an incident that has plunged the entire sporting community into deep mourning.
The Stoppage-Time Collision
The fatal incident took place during Monday's league contest between Tenerife and Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez. The two sides were locked in a 2-2 draw deep into added time. Seven minutes into stoppage time, a long ball was played forward, prompting Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono to charge out towards the centre circle in an attempt to clear the danger. In doing so, Owono collided heavily with De Miguel, with his knee appearing to strike the advancing forward.
The impact left De Miguel lying motionless on the turf. Medical teams rushed onto the pitch immediately to administer emergency assistance as the seriousness of the head and chest injuries became instantly apparent to everyone inside the ground.
Match Abandoned Amid Shock and Tears
The severity of the collision left players from both squads visibly distressed. Several of De Miguel's team-mates were seen in tears on the pitch as paramedics worked on the forward. The match official brandished a straight red card to dismiss Owono for the challenge before deciding to abandon the fixture entirely.
De Miguel was quickly transferred to an ambulance to be rushed to the nearest hospital. During the journey, the forward suffered a cardiac arrest inside the vehicle, but paramedics were able to resuscitate him en route to the medical facility.
Neurological Decline in Hospital
Tenerife initially updated supporters on Monday night, stating that De Miguel's condition was serious but stable. However, his health deteriorated rapidly overnight. On Tuesday morning, a subsequent medical report confirmed that the player had worsened neurologically. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, the 30-year-old Spaniard died at 07:00 GMT (08:00 local time).
Emotional Tributes from Both Clubs
CD Tenerife confirmed the devastating news in a deeply emotional public statement, expressing overwhelming heartbreak over the tragic loss of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. The club stated that no words of comfort could lessen the profound sadness felt across the organisation, offering solidarity to the player's family, his loved ones, and the entire Tenerife community.
The club added that the family of Jesus de Miguel wished to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the widespread messages of support, while requesting absolute respect for their privacy during this painful ordeal.
Condolences also arrived from Andorra, the club co-owned by former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique. Andorra stated that they were left devastated and broken-hearted by the event, sending their sincerest condolences to De Miguel's family, his friends, his team-mates, and everyone connected with CD Tenerife.
