Tensions along the border between Ukraine and Moldova have reached a critical peak following a devastating drone attack that claimed two lives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Russian aerial strikes caused widespread destruction in the border region, forcing authorities to immediately shut down key transit routes.
Starokozache Crossing Closed Amid Heavy Damage
The Starokozache border crossing was shut down indefinitely following the violent overnight assault. Images from the scene show multiple burnt-out vehicles scattered among thick debris. According to Odesa regional head Oleh Kiper, the critical crossing is located about 500km south of Kyiv. The strike resulted in two fatalities and left three others injured, while Moldova's foreign ministry confirmed that a Moldovan driver was also wounded in the incident.
Widespread Strikes Hit Kyiv and Russian Cities
The violence extended far beyond the border zone. In the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, a Russian drone struck a nine-storey residential building, killing a woman and injuring 14 people, including two children. Simultaneously, Russian authorities reported that a Ukrainian drone attack in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk killed four people, including a child. Regional governor Veniamin Kondratiev noted that the massive assault injured 29 people and caused extensive damage to residential properties, a church, and a preschool. Furthermore, a drone struck an industrial facility in the Arctic city of Novy Urengoy, nearly 3,000km or 1,864 miles away from Ukraine, triggering a fire though regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov confirmed no injuries occurred there. Russia's defence ministry claimed its forces successfully intercepted and shot down 596 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Moldova Expresses Growing Alarm Over Airspace Violations
Moldova is increasingly getting entangled in the broader conflict. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan revealed that 17 drones struck Moldovan territory in August alone, surpassing the total number recorded throughout the entirety of last year. Expressing strong frustration on social media, he stated that individuals who downplay these threats and refuse to name the aggressor are merely denying reality. He emphasized that Russia initiated the war in February 2022 and bears sole responsibility for the ongoing bloodshed. In response to the border incident, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed urgent calls for international backing, asserting that the aggression must be stopped immediately before it spreads any further.
High-Level Diplomatic Talks Run Alongside Escalating Attacks
The latest wave of strikes unfolded just a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump regarding potential pathways to end the war. The Trump administration has been actively pushing for direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, with Ukrainian officials suggesting that talks could commence as early as this month. However, the Kremlin maintains that it is still premature to finalize a specific date or venue. These diplomatic discussions followed weekend meetings in Moscow between Russian leadership and US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who subsequently travelled to Kyiv on Sunday to hold discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
