During a major public ceremony in Vadodara, Gujarat on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated several key infrastructure and industrial development projects to the nation. Highlighting the completion of the massive 2,800 km Dedicated Freight Corridor, he termed it the vital lifeline of 21st century India. The Prime Minister emphasized that over the past 12 years, the country's operational culture has undergone a complete transformation, enabling long-delayed ventures to reach completion in record time. By structurally segregating freight transport from passenger rail lines, modern Indian Railways has significantly boosted logistics efficiency and provided a fresh momentum to the national economy.
History of the Dedicated Freight Corridor and Logistics Transformation
Reflecting on the background of the Dedicated Freight Corridor, Prime Minister Modi shared that the conceptual plan for a dedicated freight line was first floated in 2004. Subsequently, a special purpose company was established in 2006 to execute the project. However, until 2014, the project remained trapped in administrative red tape, with files endlessly shuffling between desks without any clear pathway forward. Following the change of governance in 2014, the initiative was accorded top priority, leading to the speedy completion of the 2,800 km Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors. Today, these two corridors form the strategic backbone of India's internal trade and commercial logistics.
Elaborating on operational upgrades, he noted that historically, freight trains shared the same tracks with passenger trains, resulting in slow travel speeds for passengers and delayed cargo delivery. The commissioning of the dedicated freight tracks has fundamentally changed this dynamic. At present, more than 430 freight trains run daily along the Eastern and Western corridors. Highlighting the speed improvements, he stated that freight trains that previously took 6.30 hours to cover a distance of 100 km now cover the same distance in less than half that time.
Demonstrating the expanded capacity, the Prime Minister cited the recent milestone of a double-stack container freight train operated from JNPT Port in Mumbai to Vadodara. A single trip of this heavy-haul train delivered cargo equivalent to over 250 traditional trucks. Taking a dig at critics, he remarked that opposition voices would complain about the future of truck operators, noting that critics seem focused on complaining while the country moves forward with modern infrastructure.
Railway Expansion in Tribal Belts and Record Budget Allocations
The Prime Minister drew attention to how the railway network is now reaching remote and previously underserved regions where train services were non-existent for decades following independence. Tribal regions across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra are being directly connected through these rail expansion projects. Contrasting this with earlier administrative practices, he pointed out that previous governments used to announce just 1 or 2 new trains in their annual rail budgets and celebrate them throughout the year. In contrast, new train services are being flagged off continuously today, with several new routes launched during the event itself.
Presenting official budget figures, he highlighted that the current annual railway budget stands at over 2.75 lakh crore rupees, representing a multi-fold increase compared to allocations made 12 years ago. This record expenditure on railway modernization is directly creating thousands of new employment and self-employment opportunities across the nation.
Vadodara's Industrial Strength and C-295 Aircraft Manufacturing
Outlining his vision for a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India), Prime Minister Modi highlighted seven core pillars, with domestic manufacturing playing a pivotal role. He noted that Vadodara has embodied a synergy between education, skills, and industry for over 150 years and fully understands the power of industrial manufacturing. Recalling his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he mentioned how delegations used to visit him demanding industrial projects, whereas Vadodara has now established itself as a premier manufacturing hub.
He proudly announced that Vadodara is now globally recognized as the production center for India's first Made-in-India military transport aircraft, the C-295. The C-295 aircraft has already conducted its maiden flight in the skies over Vadodara. Furthermore, India has emerged as a major producer of railway coaches, metro cars, and locomotives over the past decade. Since 2014, approximately 50,000 modern railway coaches have been manufactured in India. Contrasting this achievement, he noted that the previous administration struggled to construct 50,000 toilets over a 10-year span.
Clean Energy Initiatives and Driving Viksit Bharat by 2047
Taking an indirect jab at opposition leaders, Prime Minister Modi asserted that while people attempting to mislead the public with rhetoric can be found at every corner, the youth of India walk firmly with the strength of truth. Young citizens closely observe the government's systematic focus on clean energy sources, including solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear power. Previously, solar projects suffered from high costs due to heavy reliance on foreign imports, but domestic manufacturing capabilities have expanded substantially in recent years.
Highlighting the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, he shared that domestic energy self-reliance has enabled over 5.5 million (55 lakh) families to install rooftop solar panels across India, including 11 lakh families in Gujarat alone. Concluding his address, he declared that this era marks a historic high point for India's youth power. Emphasizing that such opportunities occur once in a generation, he urged every citizen to remain dedicated to the goal of building a fully developed India by 2047.
