Medical graduates completing their mandatory practical training across various regions of India are witnessing a notable improvement in their monthly remuneration. The administration in Jammu and Kashmir has officially raised the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns to 25,000 rupees. Previously, these trainees received 12,300 rupees every month, meaning the recent policy revision results in a direct monthly increase of 12,700 rupees. Importantly, this financial revision also extends coverage to foreign medical graduates undergoing training in the region.
Significant Stipend Doubling in Jammu and Kashmir
The upward revision in Jammu and Kashmir followed a prolonged period of agitation and protests by medical trainees demanding better compensation. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the decision on the social media platform X, confirming that the new rates take effect retrospectively from October 1, 2026. In percentage terms, this adjustment represents a dramatic increase of approximately 103.3 percent, effectively more than doubling the previous payout. Trainees who receive the revised stipend for a full twelve-month period will accumulate a total of 300,000 rupees annually, compared to 147,600 rupees under the older structure.
Protests Prompted the Administration to Act
Medical and dental interns in the region initially launched a strike in September 2026 to press for higher financial allowances. Following an appeal from the administration on September 8 requesting a month to evaluate the demands, the protest was temporarily paused. However, as the grievances remained unaddressed, trainees resumed their strike action. The decisive announcement from the Chief Minister arrived immediately on the following Wednesday, successfully resolving the standoff and ensuring that foreign medical graduates were included alongside regular trainees.
Revisions Implemented in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand
Beyond Jammu and Kashmir, several other states have introduced comparable financial upgrades for medical trainees over the past two years. The Uttar Pradesh cabinet passed a resolution on August 25, 2026, elevating the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns across government medical institutions and universities from 12,000 rupees to 25,000 rupees. This modification benefited nearly 3,928 medical and dental students by delivering an increase of roughly 108.3 percent. Similarly, the government of Uttarakhand hiked the stipend for undergraduate medical students at its five state-run medical colleges from 17,000 rupees to 25,000 rupees following cabinet approval on September 11, 2026.
Additional State Adjustments Across the Country
Financial relief has reached medical trainees in other states as well, including Chhattisgarh, where the monthly stipend at government medical facilities was raised from 15,900 rupees to 25,000 rupees. This adjustment provided trainees with an additional 9,100 rupees monthly, representing an upward shift of about 57.2 percent. Similar stipend enhancements have also been documented across Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar over recent years, establishing a broader trend toward standardizing intern remuneration across Indian medical establishments.
