A late-night confrontation broke out between law enforcement personnel and armed criminals in the Sonari area of Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on September 6. Two accused individuals involved in a high-profile mall shooting attempted to escape by snatching a service handgun from an officer during a search operation near the Marine Drive forest. As the suspects opened fire on the police contingent, officers returned fire in self-defense, wounding both criminals in their legs before subduing them. The injured suspects were subsequently moved to MGM Hospital for immediate medical care.
Background of the Bindal Mall Restaurant Attack
The confrontation is directly connected to a broad daylight shooting incident that took place at a restaurant located inside Bindal Mall in Sonari on September 26. In that strike, three assailants arrived on a motorcycle, and two of them stepped inside the dining area to open fire. The assault left four people critically injured. The entire sequence of events was recorded by the premises' CCTV cameras, providing authorities with critical evidence regarding the suspects' identities and movements.
According to Jamshedpur Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Ehtesham Waqarib, investigators moved swiftly to unravel the plot. A conspirator linked to the planning of the shootout was identified, taken into custody, and remanded to judicial custody earlier in the investigation. However, the three frontline shooters managed to evade capture. To accelerate their arrest, authorities had declared a cash reward of 1 lakh rupees on each of the three absconding gunmen.
The Search for Concealed Weapons
Intensive manhunts led to a major breakthrough late in the evening when the police successfully captured two of the prime shooters, identified as Mohan Yadav and Ajit Mandal. During custodial questioning, the duo confessed that the firearms utilized during the mall shooting had been concealed behind a tree in the dense vegetation along Marine Drive. Acting on these confessions, a police detachment escorted both suspects directly to the secluded forested area to retrieve the hidden weaponry.
Firearm Snatching and Retaliatory Police Action
While the search for the hidden weapons was underway in the forested terrain of Marine Drive, the two suspects attempted an escape. Exploiting a momentary lapse, they snatched a service pistol directly from the holster of a police constable and began shooting at the accompanying team. The criminals sought to create panic under the cover of darkness and escape into the thick brush.
A brief exchange of fire ensued, during which three rounds were discharged from both sides. The police team quickly took tactical positions and initiated controlled retaliatory fire aimed at neutralizing the threat. Both Mohan Yadav and Ajit Mandal sustained gunshot wounds to their legs, completely halting their escape attempt. Officers immediately secured the pair on the spot and transferred them to MGM Hospital for treatment under police guard, while raids continue to track down the third absconding accomplice.
