The weather in Madhya Pradesh has turned hard to read. In one part of the state the sun is blazing down, while in another, thunderstorms, lightning and rain are bringing some relief. Today, on 24 June 2026, that split will be even sharper. Clouds will come and go through the day, and scattered showers will ease the heat in places, but several districts will battle harsh sunshine and dust storms at the same time. In effect, people could feel a double dose of weather in a single day.
Yellow Alert Across 41 Districts
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for most of the central, southern and eastern districts of the state. In all, 41 districts fall within this alert. They include Bhopal, Jabalpur, Indore, Rewa, Dhar, Vidisha, Guna, Raisen, Sehore, Rajgarh, Narmadapuram, Betul, Harda, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Singrauli, Maugunj, Satna, Anuppur, Shahdol, Dewas, Shajapur, Umaria, Dindori, Chhindwara, Seoni, Mandla, Balaghat, Panna, Sagar, Katni, Damoh, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Niwari, Maihar and Pandhurna.
Storms in Some Places, Heatwave in Others
These districts are likely to see thunderstorms with lightning and dust storms moving at 40 to 50 km per hour. On the other side, Narsinghpur and Sidhi will feel the grip of a heatwave, which, combined with the humidity, could throw daily life out of gear.
The Gwalior-Chambal division, along with the northern and north-western parts of the state, will stay completely dry today. Areas such as Bhind, Sheopur, Guna, Morena, Shivpuri, Neemuch and Mandsaur are unlikely to get any immediate relief from the heat for now.
What to Keep in Mind During Storms
Given the shifting weather and the chance of storms, the Bhopal weather centre has issued some important advice for people:
- Stay indoors during thunder and lightning. If you must step out, do not take shelter under trees or electric poles.
- Unplug electronic appliances to guard against lightning strikes.
- Avoid working in open fields and grounds during a storm. Keep away from trees, electric wires and construction sites.
- Drive slowly and keep a firm grip on the steering wheel.
- Do not lean against concrete walls or lie down on concrete floors.
How to Protect Livestock
- Do not leave animals near open grounds, ponds, rivers or water sources.
- Keep all animals in a safe, covered shed at night.
- Do not send animals out for open grazing during the peak afternoon heat.
- Arrange enough drinking water and shaded space for the animals.
- Do not tie animals under trees during lightning and storms.
Ways to Stay Safe From Heat and Heatwave
- Keep drinking plenty of water and stay hydrated.
- Avoid going out in the sun between 12 noon and 4 pm.
- Wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothes.
- Cover your head with a cloth, cap or umbrella when stepping out in the sun.
