Persistent heavy downpours across Maharashtra and Gujarat have severely disrupted daily life and regional connectivity. Over the last 72 hours, intense rain has battered the state border areas, completely cutting off standard communication lines. Due to zero connectivity near the border check posts, contacting emergency services or coordinating travel has become highly challenging. Amid these harsh conditions, local authorities are conducting rescue missions, though the deteriorating weather continues to hamper their efforts. Currently, the Vapi check post remains entirely closed, and even Army personnel traveling from Maharashtra toward Gujarat have found themselves trapped in the massive gridlock.
NH-48 Hit by Miles of Stranded Vehicles
The traffic situation on NH-48, the vital national highway connecting Mumbai and Gujarat, has deteriorated significantly. A massive traffic jam spanning approximately 35 to 40 kilometers has formed along this highway. Thousands of vehicles have been stranded on the road for the last two to three days without any movement. Commuters have no alternative routes to escape the bottleneck, leaving them stuck in place. While a brief lull in the rain last night offered a temporary glimmer of hope, heavy downpours resumed with full force this morning, compounding the difficulties of those stranded on the highway.
Severe Disruptions to Railway Services
The impact of the continuous rainfall is not limited to roadways; rail services have also faced severe operational delays. Due to waterlogging on the tracks in South Gujarat, seven Mumbai-bound passenger trains were halted at various railway stations in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday. Addressing the situation, Western Railway's Ratlam Division PRO Mukesh Kumar stated that the water level of a bridge in the Gholvad-Umergam road section of the Mumbai Central Division rose above the danger mark. This forced a halt in operations along the Delhi-Mumbai line. For safety reasons, the affected trains were held up at stations including Ratlam, Namli, Nagda, Meghnagar, Limkheda, Thandla Road, and Bamnia.
Palghar Rescue Missions and School Closures
In Maharashtra's Palghar district, the heavy rainfall over the past two days resulted in two casualties. To assist residents in submerged areas, the local administration along with two NDRF teams conducted overnight rescue operations. During this multi-agency effort, 244 people were successfully evacuated from flooded zones. Vivekanand Kadam, chief of the District Disaster Management Cell, confirmed that the joint rescue operations concluded at around 5 AM. Severe flooding has inundated several parts of Palghar, with Dahanu and Talasari being the worst-affected areas. Due to safety concerns, the district administration ordered all schools and educational institutions in Palghar to remain closed on Friday.
