Days before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are even formally announced, the state's political temperature is already rising. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath travelled straight from the Tirupati Balaji temple in Andhra Pradesh to Ayodhya, where he bowed before Ram Lalla in a dandvat pranam, before turning his visit into a pointed political message aimed squarely at Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
A journey from the south to Ayodhya with a political undertone
Political observers are reading the back-to-back visit as more than a religious itinerary. Going from Tirupati straight to Ram Lalla's court is being seen as a deliberate message of Sanatan cultural unity stretching across the country. Jitendra Mishra, the newly appointed CEO of the Ram temple trust, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, accompanied the Chief Minister during the temple visit. A video from the visit shows Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra (Retd.), described as the trust's first CEO, standing alongside Yogi Adityanath inside the temple premises.
While at the temple, Yogi Adityanath also sat down with the Ram temple construction committee and the new CEO to review ongoing development work at the temple complex and the arrangements for devotees' darshan. He told officials that turning Ayodhya into the world's grandest cultural capital remains his government's top priority, and that no laxity on that front would be tolerated.
A jab at the opposition from Ram Lalla's court, and a gift for anganwadi workers
After seeking blessings before Lord Ram, the Chief Minister turned his attention to his political rivals. He said, "The people of UP will give a fitting reply in 2027 to those forces conspiring to halt the cultural revival of Ayodhya and the state." At the same event, he made a significant welfare announcement, distributing appointment letters and sarees to newly appointed anganwadi sahayikas and declaring that their monthly honorarium would be raised to Rs 12,000, a move set to directly benefit thousands of women workers across the state.
Akhilesh Yadav hits back
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav responded sharply on social media to the Chief Minister's Ayodhya visit and remarks. "Every time elections draw near, the BJP suddenly remembers God," he wrote. He went on to argue that people have now understood that religion is being used as a cover to distract from ten years of failures, unemployment, rising prices and deteriorating law and order. He further claimed that the Samajwadi Party is fighting for development, jobs and the rights of the backward classes, Dalits and minorities, while the ruling party is attempting to polarise votes in the name of religion.
Akhilesh Yadav frequently uses the acronym PDA to describe this coalition, standing for backward classes, Dalits and minorities, and it has become the Samajwadi Party's central electoral formula in recent times.
There is also talk in political circles that if Akhilesh Yadav manages to pull BJP's Dalit leader Kaushal Kishore over to his side, it would be seen as a major setback for the BJP.
2027 shaping up as Hindutva versus PDA
According to political analysts, Yogi Adityanath's twin visit to Tirupati and Ayodhya has already set the tone for the 2027 election narrative. The BJP's pitch is expected to be built around cultural nationalism, the grand Ram temple, governance and law and order, and consolidating its Sanatan vote base along with its development record. The opposition, led by the Samajwadi Party, is expected to counter with its PDA formula, demands for a caste census, unemployment and inflation, and the government's administrative shortcomings, while trying to make inroads into the extremely backward and Dalit vote banks.
The Election Commission is yet to formally announce the poll schedule, but the aggressive tone set by Yogi Adityanath and the sharp counterattack from Akhilesh Yadav already suggest that Uttar Pradesh in 2027 is heading toward one of the most closely watched political battles in the country.
